Stand Names @ The Triangle

If you believe some of the stuff being spouted on the Transfer Window thread, Owen Dale should definitely have a stand named after him.

I’m happy to accept a sponsorship for the stadium. It’ll be one of the revenue streams we’ll need to pay the damn thing off so it can be called the ‘Vagisil Arena’ for all I care if they stump up £10m for the rights to it.

I just hope we have an informal name for it that we can refer it to. Huddersfield play in the Accu Stadium which has been known as the McAlpine, Galpharm and John Smiths since it was built. It’s strictly speaking called the Kirklees Stadium but when does anyone call it that?

I’d like an informal name that we can refer to it when the sponsors inevitably change. It can be our constant contact even when the sponsors won’t be. ‘The Triangle’ works fine for that.

Bolton too - the Reebok became the Macron became the University of Bolton Stadium became the gloriously named (especially if you channel your inner Clay Davis) Toughsheet Community Stadium.

Problem for Bolton (and subsequent sponsors) is that they never came up with a proper informal name, so most people still call it the Reebok.

We'll have to work hard on calling it the 'Triangle' or 'New Manor' or whatever we settle on if we're going to avoid becoming permanent corporate lackeys (but yeah, we want the cash).

It will 100% have the naming rights sold. That is part of the financial package, and always has been.

It's very lucrative for a new stadium, much more so than for a re-named existing stadium, and we could be looking at a long term deal at something like £2m per annum, for ten years. The first name a stadium has is usually the one that sticks, which is why that first stadium naming deal is so lucrative.

However, we have been calling it The Triangle for a couple of years now, and it will be nearly three more years before it opens. I doubt very much that any naming rights will be agreed in the next couple of years, as they usually want an actual structure to be in place before parting with any cash, so there's a very good chance that The Triangle will stick. I hope so, as this is the best of both worlds, we get the cash for a stupid stadium name, without anybody actually calling it that.

The (sponsors name) Manor.
Agree with this. If we are going to be selling naming rights (and it sounds like we are) there are a few ways to do it:

1) To just call it the '[sponsor's name] stadium', like Bolton and Huddersfield did. Trouble is, when you change sponsor, there is no underlying name for the stadium, and no identity.
2) Some complicated contrivance such as St Andrews @ Knighthead Park. Just naff and quickly dated, like some Y2K rubbish.
3) To incorporate a sponsor's name and identity. I like how Shrewsbury kept the 'Meadow' aspect of their old stadium name, yet have been able to change ground sponsor over time (Greenhous Meadow, Montgomery Waters Meadow, Croud Meadow - I suspect Shrews fans just call it the Meadow).

So I vote for option 3. I hear Colin's arguments about using 'Triangle' as the identity aspect. But I just think that will seem very odd to those not itk, unless we had some actual triangle aspect to the stadium design (which we don't). And the Oxford Stadium is already taken as a name - otherwise Oxford would have made sense as the identity bit. So I would go for 'Manor' as the identifier - (eg) The BMW Manor.

I also understand Steve M's desire not to sully the memory of the original Manor by calling some modern comparative dullness by the same name. But I prefer to keep the memory alive. Up the Manor!

The Ian Middleton Sprinkler System
The Suzanne McIvor Septic Tank
The Steve Hill Wine Cellar
The Linda Ward DUH Triangle Gardens
The Nik Soheili Flag Pole
The Victoria Campbell Wasteland (at the back)
The Fiona Mawson Abstained Tree

I’m in two minds about whether we adopt some sort of ‘Manor’ use in the name of it but this is the most compelling case for it.

It means we have a constant name for it even when the inevitable sponsors come and go.

Even I was swayed slightly by the argument to be fair.

Think instead of North East South West stands, since the stadium is at an angle, they should be named after their relative angle to longitudinal grid lines from the perspective of the view from seats.

18°, 108°, 198° and 288° stands.

If north is the roundabout, Frieze Way west and Parkway east, the pitch is rotated about 20–25° anticlockwise. That gives you NNW, ENE, SSE and WSW stands.

Well the best I can do is...

The stands would be

1) North-Northwest by North Stand at the top behind the goal.
2) East-Northeast by East Stand (going clockwise)
3) South-Southeast by South Stand (behind the goal at the bottom)
4) West-Southwest by West Stand (Main Stand)

Catchy. I like it.

🎶 Can you hear the East-Northeast by East sing? I can't hear a f*****g thing 🎶

Looking forward to the latest rendition of @Northstandboy's alias.

Quite like the idea of using the last two digits - if not for the stands themselves, for the kiosks or some such....

My suggestions for the stands -

Wytham,
Otmoor,
City and
Village

It makes sense to have the east stand, the home & singers stand.
Seeing as it's the Oxford Road, perfect for songs .
We are the Oxford Road,& we are the left /right side Oxford road..

Hmmm, you haven't thought this through. I'm not sure that 'Town End' will go down particularly well...
Oooops 😲 - I thought that sounded familiar.... I was more focused on the reaction to suggesting the village end ( which I thought would be a nice nod to tradition - particularly if the usual suspects push through their 'town' bid).
