Other European SPL

This thread could look silly soon but, could we see the first non old firm winner of the SPL since pre-historic times.

Hearts 3-1 win at home to Celtic today but them comfortably at the top. Celtic and Rangers both going through tough spells.

Is it on?
Well there is an OUFC link as Stuart Findlay is playing well for Hearts. And Chris Cadden is playing for 3rd place Hibs.

Hearts are reaping the rewards of the owner Tony Bloom's systems that he uses so well at Brighton.

Hopefully purely for the ongoing meltdowns at both clubs.

I'd be a little more cautious.

In 2005-06, Hearts won 10 and drew 2 of their first 12 games.

They finished the season in second, 17 points behind Celtic.

However, this could be the season...
Not to mention 1985/86 when they came runners up on goal difference after looking odds on....a last day 0-2 defeat to Dundee blew it for them....just a draw required.
And the same season runners up in the Scottish Cup !

Bookies still make Celtic title favourites at 4/6.

Massive vindication for Tony Blooms methods if Hearts go on and do it.

As a kid I decided to make Hearts my Scottish team purely because of that good start and I liked the name and kit in my first panini sticker album, can’t say I stick to it when I realised they were not actually that good.

Be nice to see a non old firm team win it in for the first time in 40 years and Hearts winning a first title in 65 years though if it happens. People say that English football is no different but 9 teams have won the top flight since Aberdeen did.

I liked them when I was a kid too, don’t they have purple or maroon shirts?

Celtic or rangers in the premier league, remember that, what a fuckin joke.

They’d do well. All that TV money plus their good support.
Agreed. As they stand, they wouldn't stand a chance. Allow them the Prem money, and they would be an Everton/Aston Villa.

Despite their start to this season, I couldn't see Hearts (or any other SPL side) making any serious threat in the EFL. A few would hop about Leagues One and two, with the larger ones dipping their toes in the Championship every now and then.

I would like to see it.

Albeit the sectarianism that might come with Celtic and Rangers would get very boring very fast.

Is it not already?
Yeah but it's contained largely to the SPL and most people don't care about the league.

If they were in the PL sectarian flags/chanting would make headlines every single week.

I would welcome some Scottish clubs into the English system but of course it would be the death of many Scottish clubs I imagine being professional entities and I don't think it would happen.

Away days to Hearts/Hibs/Aberdeen would be fun though!

In fairness, I'm surprised FIFA/UEFA haven't come down harder on the SPL for not putting sanctions upon the clubs for that. Definitely wouldn't be accepted in the Prem. Probably because the SPL is the old firm, and would capitulate without the revenue they make from broadcasting their matches, so show them some lenience.

The last time a non Old Firm team won the title was Aberdeen in 19845-85. They were managed by someone called Alex Ferguson. I wonder whatever happened to him...

I give it a few weeks before my opening post begins to look silly.

I really do think it would be great if a non old firm team won it though. Might happen with Blooms involvement at Hearts if not the season, before 2030.

Dundee United won it in 1982-3 (I checked, but I thought I remembered them winning it). It would be great to have another new winner soon. Apparently Hearts haven't won it since 1959-60.

The entire list of Scottish champions since 1890 (one of the early years Rangers and Dumbarton were joint champions)
