Non-League Southend

Southend Utd have a good fanbase and great potential. Was always a good day out. Surely events must eventually turn in their favour.

I used to go to Roots Hall many times when I lived in Chelmsford and it holds pleasant memories.
Hope they survive all the difficulties, that so many clubs have had including us

Horrible to see this happening to Southend. Hopefully we will see a turnaround in their fortunes. Lower league teams need all the income they can get, it’s a shame Premier League clubs are more interested in touring the US, Asia etc to sell shirts than play a pre season friendly against the likes of Southend which would generate much needed funds.

If only the council had a stake in the land that the stadium sits on, if not the stadium itself, they would be in a much stronger position to help the club. Particularly given it’s becoming obvious that the last thing Ron Martin wants is a football club wanting to use it, getting in the way of that sweet, sweet development.

A fascinating read.

Pertinent points.................... and rather close to home.

"In 1998, his company joined with a property development firm to purchase Southend FC and its stadium, Roots Hall, for £4m. The new owners, trading as South Eastern Leisure (SEL), immediately split Roots Hall from the football club – creating Roots Hall Ltd – and started charging the club £400,000 a year rent to use it"

"The first planning application for Fossetts Farm was made in 2000, but it wasn’t backed by the council until January 2007. It was to be a 22,000-seat stadium that would include hotel and conference facilities, restaurants, shops and residential buildings."

Morecambe are looking in real trouble. Hopefully it is sorted but even if it is they are going to mess next season and relegation on the cards.

The latest on Southend:

They have 6 weeks to complete the takeover as they've had a 3rd and 'final' adjournment of the latest Court Case for a Winding Up Petition. They are also under another transfer embargo.

It’s sad to see what is happening with Southend. A proper football league club IMO and the fans there are brilliant. Some of the best I’ve had the privilege of being in an away end with when they played Wrexham a couple of seasons ago.

I think Morecambe will go the same way and they have seemed to be on a downward slide since Jim Bentley left them.

Disagree ⬆️. Sarfend have been cheating the system and getting a competitive advantage for many years, failing to pay their taxes when rivals do. They are the epitome of an unsustainable club, just like Stoke and Everton are higher up the leagues. By staying afloat through repeated failed promises made in the courts, they’ve managed to attract players beyond their reach, and they are blocking a valuable place in the NL which a team lower down but better run could take. There are only so many failed promises and half-truths you can tell the court, and I hope the taxman winds them up.

I think their fans know all this.

I would usually agree but the fans haven’t just sat back like other clubs do while they cheat the system, they have continued to protest and tried to get the owner out for a very long time now.

Sadly, there comes a time when you have to take a struggling dog on a one-way trip to the vet. Their time has long since come.

If the fans had realised that their protests meant little, they could’ve changed strategies: boycotted the club, started a supporters’ takeover etc, but the situation is too far gone for that I feel.

For the fairness and integrity of the game as a whole, they really need to be closed down before the new season starts.

Right, I hope we don’t end up in that situation. Would you say the same thing then?

Were you a fan when we had buckets outside the away end asking for other fans to donate so we could survive?
How did you feel when we went s**t or bust in the conference? If we hadn’t won that game in 2010 we were done and we wouldn’t be celebrating getting to the championship like we are now.
Do you blame us as a fan base being in that position?
