 Southampton spying on Middlesbrough

Not sure, but the game mentioned was the home game on Boxing Day
Not that’s been mentioned but frankly I’d say it opens up a can of worms that we are one of the affected sides as could be said that they’ve gained in the reverse fixture if they have taken videos for use as let’s face it, our style didn’t really change too much under Bloomfield

Did they spy on us before our game at Southampton?
I'd imagine they've done it every week but it's trying to prove it. I'm sure their argument for spying on us first time would be that we'd just changed managers so all their previous analysis would be useless because we could change so much. Still cheating but I'm sure it's how they'd justify that while claiming they didn't need to do it against other more settled teams.

Apparently Eckert has taken responsibility as it happens in Europe and he wasn't aware it was against the rules here. A pretty weak defence but does lend weight to the argument they were at it every week.

Yeah this appeal is probably going to dig their hole deeper

So spying on Middlesbrough means Southampton are expelled from the championship play offs and Middlesbrough get reinstated into the play offs.

Southampton have also pleaded guilty to spying on atleast two other clubs during the championship season. So why aren't they expelled from the league all together?

I would really like to think that if the shoe were on the other foot, and we were chucked out of the play-offs for cheating, that we might demonstrate a little more self-awareness than these Saints fans seem to be able to.

The change of manager argument goes out of the window when you take into consideration that 2 of the 3 games were against teams that hadn't changed their manager. If you want to accept that argument then should you automatically assume that they spied on all other teams they played after a recent managerial change?

The EFL initiate the charge iirc but it is dealt with by an Independent Commission.
Yeah, but I believe it’s The The independent disciplinary commission that deals the charge and not EFL! As per snippet from BBC website;

The independent disciplinary commission ALSO handed Southampton a four-point deduction in the Championship for next season

Do we really think the EFL (or whoever) will impose a points deduction this season which would relegate them?

If more clubs come back with evidence, would this increase the punishment?

I suppose if the appeal goes against Southampton, then they may get a heavier punishment.

EFL should say if you appeal and lose, you get a x point deduction this season.

Sadly we went down by more than 3 points, so even if they award us the win, we'd still have been relegated by a point.

Would that mean we did the double over them this season?

Simple demotion down a league would be sufficient.

Not just because it benefits us but because they have blatantly broken the rules on 3 occasions and probably far more to gain a sporting advantage.

They should be demoted and removed from the competition.

We lost out on £10m, while they get to compete in the championship with an 8 team playoff competition. They don’t deserve that opportunity

We got relegated because we weren’t good enough over a season.
Very true.

However they have cheated and shown no regard for sporting integrity.

We could have finished 10 points behind and 3rd bottom and I’d still be asking for a demotion. They did it numerous times & did so brazenly until caught. They have brought the competition into disrepute, remove them from the competition. They don’t deserve a shot at promotion to the premier league next season.

Hold up... This is about the December match, not the more recent one! So we beat them despite them spying on us 😂

We're still not staying up though.

Assume the EFL have contacted all Championship clubs since this came to light to ask them to check CCTV or if anything suspicious reported etc, and so us and Ipswich have been able to confirm the evidence presented.

Admitting it against 2 teams they didn’t beat and whose fate was ultimately decided regardless is unbelievably cynical though - sure there must be more.

This is going to get seriously messy. Talk now of Southampton players seeking PFA advice... those who got relegated last year were due a 40% payrise with promotion this season.
