I'm looking into this.

Just had a quote for:

12 x AIKO 495W black panels
Battery Hybrid Inverter
1 x Tesla Power Wall 3
1 x Tesla Power Wall expansion
1 x Tesla Gateway

Installation etc.

£23k

I don't know what I was expecting but that seems high to me. Very highly rated outfit in Reading.

Tesla pushes the prices up. Which company is it. We had some odd experiences of at least one 'highly rated' lot.
 
Other quotes will arrive. I’m happy to spend a bit extra in a premium brand that I can be confident will be around (the recent GivEnergy collapse is concerning), but after looking at other similar installations, I was thinking it’d be £4-5k cheaper.
 
Just had two quotes.
One from Project Solar UK:
£16.9k for 12 505w panels, 5kw Fox inverter and 2 Fox EP6 batteries (11.5kWh storage in total). Estimated 4890kwh annual generation, 10 years to pay for itself (subject to current and projected tariffs).

£12.7k for 10 455w panels, 5 kw Fox ESS inverter, 1 Fox ESS 10.2kwh battery. Estimated 3480kWh annual generation, 11 years to pay for itself.

Pretty sure we could squeeze 4 extra panels out of Octopus which would take generation close to the PSUK estimate . . .but for initial outlay.

As we run an EV and are probably switching to ASHP this year, we need all the generation we can get, and more (and expandable) battery storage with ability to top up on cheap rate from the grid can only be a good thing. Not to mention being able to isolate completely from the grid should a power cut arise (many systems don't offer that).

Sorry, it was £10,495 for Octopus . . .

I will no doubt be giving OGE a whirl and see where we can get to.
 
Since the end of Aug, i have produced 2MWh of electrcity.

That includes about 2 weeks of no solar due to the panels being taken down for a new roof!
 
I’ve been in touch with OGE. Very knowledgeable guy and quoted me significantly less than the first quote (Sigenergy rather than Tesla batteries though).

We got Fox Ess from the local councils reverse auction.
Chugs along nicely, chuck a couple of overnight hours into the battery in Winter and happy days.
About now until late September the panels keep us going, charge the battery and a surplus goes back into the grid during the day.

Best decision we ever made considering current costs of power.

Yep i charge my battery at 6.5p and export at 13p, soon to be 15p.

April - so far i am owed money!

You can not beat the soft aroma of well seasoned Oak on a cold Winters evening.

Seasoning wood is a craft in itself.

Normally split and store for 6-12 months depending on weather and species of tree.

Due to time restraints we had to store a very large pile, roughly 2.5 tons, in rounds which are about 4ft long, that`s been sat for 8 months so will chainsaw into smaller rounds and split for the log store.

Once the big store is empty the pile of split stuff will see us through Winter 2026, then I`ll scavenge, beg and labour for another load.

You can accelerate the seasoning/drying process by putting the split wood in a greenhouse/poly-tunnel with enough ventilation.
 
Must say we have a log burner in our house, been here 4 years and never lit it, partly because we haven't bothered to get the chimney checked and don't want to burn the place down

Have to get ours done annually or the house insurance would be invalid.
House is 100 years old this year and has had an evolution of heating arrangements as we discovered when we were renovating!
 
My move to EDF was really smooth and surprisingly painless. Pricing has worked out much better for me compared to Octopus, especially if you can make use of off‑peak hours.

Current rates I’m getting:
  • Peak: 30p/kWh
  • Off-peak: 6.99p/kWh (23:00–06:00 — longer window than most suppliers)
  • Standing charge: 52.85p/day
  • Export rate: 15p/kWh
  • Plus free electricity on Sundays, which has been a nice bonus.
