Last Friday we had an installation of solar panels and battery.

Already I can see the benefits in the summer, we can easily not use any electricity from the grid, producing our own, then selling it back for around £2-3 a day!

And the winter will see us charge our battery over night at 8.5p, saving a stupid amount per month even without any solar generation.

I went with a local supplier, father and son both OUFC fans. I looked at Sun Save, overall cost for me was £24k over 20 years.

If you can pay outright (we took a 5 year 0% green loan from our mortgage provider) then you’ll make loads more back.

We were seriously thinking about solar panels but then we had to help pay off my sister in laws debts so that my father in law didn't lose his flat (a long story). And now we've got a lovely little baby. So unless the government offer a grant of some kind I don't think we'll get to the up front costs anytime soon (possibly ever).

We bought a house with panels installed and paid off. Older panels with no battery, so it's all sold back, and probably nowhere near as efficient as modern ones.

Nice little bonus quarterly though.

Your bank could offer a 0% loan over x years.

Wish I’d done it earlier in the summer, would be using it to its full potential.

Would be well worth considering a battery.

Last two days we have lived off the solar powering the house, then charging the battery from 40% to 100%.
 
We have had solar panels for 14 years. We got the most generous feed in tarrif before the Cameron government cut them, the capital cost was paid back after 9 years and now we are clearing a profit of £1800 a year which goes up annually in line the CPI. The FiT is guarenteed for 25 years. It was the best investment I ever made.

This is what tempted me about Sun Save - zero initial outlay, and then you pay off the panels over 20 years.

They call it a subscription, but it's effectively a loan. And the savings they talked about (versus sticking with grid power over the 20 years) make it a serious consideration.

(I'm not on a commission...!)

You look at the cost your paying for the kit…. It’a double the cost.

But I understand for some that’s the only way.

I pay £103 a month for 5 years, Sun Save was £103 for 20 years.

Ofn you can’t get 0%, probably just as cheap to get a bank loan over 5 years and pay back,

What rate do you get?
 
Recently signed up for a single phase,15kw 30 panel system.
Sigenergy 12kw inverter, 16Kwh battery and Gatewsy ( EPS during power cuts )
On paper 12% return on investment.
But due to lack of local capacity at substation etc, the DPN restricted it to a 5kw inverter and 3.8kw export limit .
Wtf.

That is a huge inverter!

What’s your system size in total?

Mines 10 x 450w panels.
 
Just one thing to look out for. With some of the "subscription" type services you are effectively leasing them the roof space. That can cause complications if you want to sell your house before the agreement reaches its termination as your buyer has to take on the lease and their mortgage provider has to agree to it.

Yes this!

If you move house you have to pay off the equipment or get the new owner’s to take it over.
 
Geek stats from yesterday.

24kwh produced, 11kwh went back to the grid, if my export was setup that would be £1.65 Octopus would be paying me.

It would have been 15kw ( 30 x 500w panels) with no restriction on exporting to the grid .
The motive was purely to generate a high return.
Obviously now much reduced to 9Kw( 18x500)
 
there are solar panels on the roof of the residential block where I am- the flats are rented so havent a scooby what the cost v benefit ratio is- what I do know is, there is rather a large amount of pigeons who reside underneath them , all of them!

heres hoping the new stadium construction company when building the stadium on the triangle, ensure they do absolutely everything possible to deter/ stop pigeons taking up residence there - freeloading, non rent paying, s**t spreading bastards

I would imagine the panels at the new stadium will be integrated into the roof space and therefore flush .
On residential homes where panels are retrofitted, you can have bird guards installed.

We put netting over ours to avoid the pigeon issue.
 
There is one house on risinghurst which has solar panels fitted,where the roof appears to consist of pigeons , having a load of pigeon Pooh surely must reduce the effectiveness of the system

Nice to see. Also great to have a local installer who will give you a realistic estimate without jumping through too many hoops.

First contact was 24th July. Green loan and install all done by 22nd Aug, so under a month.
