National News Sir Keir Starmer

Nicely put
The threshold is way too low
Pensioners get less than half the minimum wage I think?

An interesting guide to what you need in retirement.

They`ve earnt it............ it rarely gets posted through the letterbox.

Some folk should stop whining about what they are entitled to and go out and earn it.
And this is why the wealth gap keeps expanding. People like EY kept in their box of proudly working hard and paying up, while all the people with real money are laughing at them, tax deducting their 200 quid breakfasts, yachts and holiday villas and contributing peanuts to the exchequer.

And yet on another thread there are hundreds of pages supporting all the hard work going into some plush new multi million pound stadium and the huge benefit that this will give to the community and the wider economy…….

All funded by our Billionaire owners.

Online self-assessment tax returns due by midnight https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c93lw5nkxlvo

Soon to be another little boost to the coffers.

Quite why people can’t submit a Tax Return on time, having had 10 months to prepare, always astounds me.

Raise the initial fine to £300 and Rach has found herself almost another £Billion … simples

You mean people who earn their cash outside Britain but choose to spend it in Britain? I don't think anyone has a problem with that do they?

I don't know. Do they? Any reason to suspect they do? Maybe Indonesia wants Indonesians to invest into the UK?

No idea, like I said, maybe.

But I am guessing there may be less well off residents of Indonesia feeling the same about the wealth gap and rich billionaires sending money overseas just as we have less well of residents in the UK getting upset about rich billionaires doing the same.

Unless your comment below was reserved just for UK billionaires?, which seems a bit disingenuous.

Lets not also forget there are plenty of benefit spongers laughing just the same at a system that rewards doing f**k all.

Hopefully Labour will get a handle on the problem, but I wont hold my breath though.

How many benefit spongers do we think there are, compared to genuine benefit claimants?

I've no idea by the way (and I guess simply agreeing a definition could also be tricky). My point being I guess that it is very easy to use words like benefit spongers and for people to get angry about the concept, without any real knowledge of what it means and how significant an issue (or non-issue) it is in the great scheme of things.

Benefit fraud is an entirely different conversation, of course and maybe a good place to start would be to actually crack down on that 🤷‍♂️

Defo an area that needs to be cracked down.. re: fraud and errors .

9.3 million people in the UK between 16 and 64 are economically inactive, about 21% of that portion of the population. I know that their will be all sorts of reasons for that but considering that's where the vast majority of the workforce come from that seems an incredibly high number. Only 1.57 million of those claim unemployment benefit, so that's a huge number not in the workforce in any way for other reasons.

There are of course plenty of genuine claimants.

By the same token there are wealthy Millionaires/Billionaires who pay a vast amount in tax and are also philanthropic.

To say that all those in receipt of benefits can just get a job is equally wrong in the same way as saying all the extremely wealthy just avoid tax.

Clearly you know more about Indonesian tax policy than me. So, no, it is not disingenuous. Once a rich person has paid a fair amount of tax it is up to them where they spend their money, regardless of if they are British or Indonesian. I don't think the well-off pay anything like a fair amount of tax in Britain and it is in their interest to make sure the political focus on being held to account falls on the poor and desperate instead.

I'm not sure anyone is being so black and white about it. I think everyone (sweeping statement!) appreciates that there are good and bad folk at both ends of the spectrum.

Just as not all benefit claimants are actually or shouldn't be "entitled" to them, not all millionaires and billionaire "earned" the huge wealth they have accumulated either. On the latter, many have had their wealth earned for them (and paid those people earning it for them very poorly and employed them in very poor conditions), inherited it or have fucked over a good few people to get there. Paragons of virtue they are not!

No, I don't.

So I can't say whether Indonesian tax law means our owners have paid what would be considered a fair amount of tax any more than you can.

But by the same token, I wont just assume that they haven't and instead consume £200 tax deductible breakfasts on their yachts or in their Villas, having a good laugh.

Although if they did, maybe you would still think that is ok because they are investing in the UK?

As you said :-

You mean people who earn their cash outside Britain but choose to spend it in Britain? I don't think anyone has a problem with that do they?

I really have no idea what point you are trying to make.

Ah sorry,

I just picked you up on your generalisation that "all the people with real money are laughing at them, tax deducting their 200 quid breakfasts, yachts and holiday villas and contributing peanuts to the exchequer".

I was basically questioning why you would view all wealthy billionaires in that way, including our owners.

No Biggy, maybe you didn't mean what you typed.

Your forensic defence of billionaires is noted (y)

Where would OUFC be without them, eh?
Well you could argue we would be in a better place if it wasn't for the one who took our stadium, half-built another one to rent to us, and took us on a journey...

(no idea if he has billions, or is just a pauper millionaire to be fair...)
