National News Sir Keir Starmer

The gift that keeps on giving.................. local news...

"Age UK in Leicester and Leicestershire fears it will have to slash the services it provides to older people because of a projected £400,000 increase in its National Insurance contributions. The charity, which runs day centres and shops across the city and county, said the charity sector would be hit hard by the policy."

Add to that they are putting inheritance tax on military death in service............unless they die "on duty".

"The head of the Forces Pension Society warned that the rule change would be “corrosive” and undermine the trust among Armed Forces personnel towards the Government."

"Change"............. you thought it would be for the better? 🤷‍♂️

^^^

Simple solution…. Reinstate the NI cut across over 30 million employed people and reduce the burden on just over 5 million small businesses.

Do the math Rach…. Spread the burden, ease the pain, increase the tax take. Re-inject business optimism.

Or….. let lots of old people become increasingly vulnerable in the same way you accused the Conservatives of doing during Covid. .

Funny how money can be found for such grandiose schemes such As LHR which flies in the face of government plans to get rid of the black hole caused by the Conservatives, said to be £22billion.
Strange they are happy to see pensioners struggling with higher heating costs and then take away their fuel allowance..£1.4billion. The tax on farmers whom are asset rich and cash poor, will save small amounts too.
They seem very happy to see companies buckling under higher NI contributions, now laying off many employees…Tesco, Sainsbury and many smaller companies too.
How dare I criticise the Labour government as I could find myself in prison

To be fair, I have no sympathy for the likes of Tesco, Sainsbury and the big boys that make in excess of £1 billion per annum.

They can easily swallow this increase without making it political/an excuse to cull. f**k em, they should have better morals.

I am more concerned about the millions of smaller businesses that effectively drive our economy.

"Rachel Reeves said developing a logistics and manufacturing site near Castle Donington in Leicestershire was "a clear demonstration of the UK's strength as a hub for innovation".

Would that be the Freeport that those dastardly Tories gave approval to in ........oh...... 2023........... never heard her mention that bit. :ROFLMAO:

Oh yes it is............. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leicestershire-65125326

So the Tories can take credit for things approved during their 14 years, but no responsibility for everything that they fucked up?!

Jenrick saying the other day that there are 72,000 outstanding court case that are increasing at 500 per month. Strangely fails to acknowledge that 69,000 were outstanding under his watch.

No need to swear, you aren`t at work now.

The new folk are showing their true colours as well.

"Congratulations to the climate campaigners. There is no more important challenge than the climate emergency. That is why I voted against Heathrow expansion."

I thought you were in favour of giving taxpayers money to people who don’t need it so that they can pass it on to charity. Thats hardly a sound use of money.

Fortunately @Essexyellows not all of us tie our scarf so tightly around our neck so we have to violently contort ourselves in order to defend a political party in the way you did on a weekly basis with whatever flavour of Tory leaders was in No. 10 at there time.

I'm against the Tory version Freeport and surprise, surprise will be against this if it takes similar form. I said before I am in favour of the winter not being a universal benefit but feel the cut off point was too low. I'm not a supporter of a third runway at Heathrow on environmental grounds but I do agree with the need for other big infrastructure projects eg new reservoirs (sorry residents of Abingdon and the surrounding).

I suppose this should knock shouts of 'Socialist Starmer' on the head (but of course it won't) but Labour is still head and shoulders better than any Tory government grifting for themselves and their mates.

If those pensioners decided to give their fuel duty to charity that was up to them. However, charities who received it no longer get it. And of course their NI payments have gone up.
Funny how it is called taxpayers money now rather than money pensioners received that they had paid into all their working lives

It is taxpayers money though, all government money is ultimately that.

If pensioners got what they paid in then the pension would be a lot, lot less, if you took out what people had already had off the state then a lot of people would actually be paying back not receiving.

Thankfully we don’t live like that, I don’t think any of us want that, but I can’t see the problem in the very wealthy not receiving money that just sits in some bank account somewhere till the kids or cat homes inherits it.

The argument should be around the threshold not the fact that the wealthy don’t get it.

Flipside - those of us who have worked all our lives, paid tax in multiple ways, grown the economy, developed society, done the hard yards etc etc should be looked after in our dotage by the state and whatever we may have put aside.

What wrangles a lot of folk is the absorption of public funds by those who have put nothing in.

If you have more taking out than putting in that is when we are all screwed and we appear to be rapidly heading that way for many and varied reasons.

I'm assuming you're including all billionaires in your 'taken out more than they've put in' list.

You work for the NHS though, as noble as that is you have been on the taxpayers teet for years even before you retire.

They`ve earnt it............ it rarely gets posted through the letterbox.

Some folk should stop whining about what they are entitled to and go out and earn it.

Only for the last 17 years......... independent before that.

And we pay tax as well ya know. ;)

Earlier in this thread I may have mentioned that, if houses are not selling they don`t build them.

"About 107,000 new homes were recorded since last July's election, down 10% on the same six months a year earlier."

That 1.5 million target............

Yeah but you get that tax back, like paying yourself 😉.

I don’t disagree with you that people should work, far to many people economically inactive and it has become a lifestyle choice for to many.

But your Tory government, previous governments, big business and huge employers like the NHS etc have helped with that problem as well, instead of bringing in millions to do the jobs we should have been training up people already here to do them, that was the harder task with the short term cost but the long term pay off, we went for the short term gdp boost and easy option but now we are having to pay the cost of that.

Nicely put
The threshold is way too low
Pensioners get less than half the minimum wage I think?

Workfare - one of my other manifesto items.

You want "benefits" then do something for them. :)

That aside there have been plenty of ideas that theoretically sound good but the implementation creates other "problems".

Apprenticeship levy for one. Our Trust has to pay out a lot of money so has decided to make it cost neutral by "upskilling" staff to "get back " as much as they put in.

That includes old folk, scheduled to retire in 6 years, doing degree level management apprenticeships........ difference made to the job? Nothing - its all process and data and making sure reports arrive to the right folk on the right day. 🤷‍♂️
