Transfer News Signing: Tony McMahon

Looks like 6thTier on Twitter called it right a few days ago...

Also said Nelson had agreed a new deal and we were looking to sign Jack Payne and Gary O’Neil.

So with McMahon and O’Neil we’re not going back to the old model of recruiting young up and coming players then?

Losing his father recently will be hard to overcome but, having been through the same thing just a few months ago, I can say that it is possible to turn loss into motivation and to strive to honour the memory and move forward.
Welcome to the club Tony, you will find us very supportive and enthusiastic. COYY's!

The deal to sign the full back, who has a reputation as a set-piece specialist, had been agreed a few weeks ago, but was only formally completed last night.

I suspect that won't be the only deal that will have been nearly done a few weeks back. Good to see we have someone who can take corners and free kicks and get the threat back we had when Maguire was in the club.

Welcome to OUFC!

I remember when he made his debut for Middlesbrough in the prem years back and was in the England under 21s, was highly thought of, had a bad injury and never really got back to that level after a long time out with it. Has still gone on to have a decent career though, and if he still has the hunger he can be a good signing. We need a bit of experience and he has that, set pieces were a bit of a waste of time for us for most of last season, but when Dickie came in we had someone who was a threat and now with a player with good delivery we could start to get more goals from dead balls, especially with what will likely be a post World Cup crackdown on holding in the box.

Happy to get a couple of experienced players in, Blackburn, Wigan,Rotherham, Sheffield United, Bolton, Millwall are the six sides that have been promoted since we were promoted back to the third tier, they all had that, we have had very little and come no where near.

Oxford United: Signs promising ex-Norwich and Southampton youth players
Yellows Forum: No! They haven't got any experience. We need experienced players in this squad.
Oxford United: Signs an experienced defender.
Yellows Forum: What, so we're not going to be developing our own talent anymore?

Seems perfectly clear that we're buying enough young talent to be able to have a few players over thirty in the squad which, if you remember, was what MApp was targeting before he left.

It even says in the article that we will be signing young players, but to help them improve and grow u need experienced heads around them. Even mapp said this. After the clear out Nelson is one of the most experienced and he’s only 25. Phil Edwards added experience to the back line and did well. Worse case he sits on the bench as Norman is keeping him out the side

I'm not sure that's the worst case, we all got to witness the phenomenon that was Tiendalli

I disagree with anyone who is writing him off as a cheapo. He will be one of the top earners at the club, he would have been on big wages at Bradford and teams like Blackburn and Posh were after him last summer.

Bradford fans give mixed reviews but reading between the lines he will be a useful addition but some question marks over his attitude. Time will tell but looking forward to having a set piece specialist again. With Maguire there was always that possibility of a goal and defences were afraid to give away fouls in dangerous areas.

Little bit concerned by the Bradford fans suggesting he's past it + has a bad attitude, but suppose the proof will be in the pudding. Do think we need to up our ante in the transfer market now - looking very light up top and in CM. Overall though, been a solid week of activity.
