General Signed & Never Played.........

Tony Malessa. Keeper signed in 2001 but never got a game ahead of Knight.

That’s a complete new one on me. Might be a few reserve goalkeepers, especially in the days pre them being in the bench who qualify though.

My favourite reserve goalie for us will always be Scott Shearer though, who was only good enough to be on the bench but not actually play games anymore, the logic behind that always escaped me.

Looking at Rage Online it seems he signed shortly before McCaldon, so became 3rd choice, so didn't stay long.

Yes, Shearer was a weird one. Wasn't Wayne Brown also one who took up the GK space on the bench while essentially just being part of the training setup?

We essentially didn't bother with a reserve goalie for quite a while to save money, would loan one in the first choice got injured. But then signed Shearer who was essentially the same as Brown, so he must have been very cheap.

At least he plays the odd cup game I suppose but not a million miles away.

Suppose an expensive reserve goalie, given how little they play, is not going to be top priority.

It was more that he isn't good enough, nowhere near. So I agree with you that it's bizarre logic to have him at all. They're either good enough to step in, or they're not.

I've said it before, but I'd much rather have a young (cheap) prospect on the bench to try and push Cumming. There doesn't seem to be much benefit in a player who has looked miles off the pace and is in the twilight of his career.

Other clubs manage to have an option off the bench - sometimes one that is as good as the incumbent. Our drop off is stark from what I've seen.

We've done really well to get Cumming (both on loan and then permanent), but beyond that it doesn't feel like a position we've taken very seriously in recent years.

Played last game of the season, let in one through his legs and retired to sell keeping gloves, as I recall.
I just looked him up, he played the first game against the season against Fleetwood when Eastwood injured his hand in the warmup. Then never again.

I remember Jim Smith signing Scot Gemmill and thinking what a good signing it looked on paper but he only made one appearance and that was for around 10 mins
as we were relegated out of the EFL.
I think that one game was away to Mansfield

Joel cooper spring to mind for this is but he did play a few games.

He seems to be doing well back in Ireland

Ah yes, the guy who signed as "one for the future". One of Stevie Kinniburgh signing for the U18s.
He has scored a league goal this season but Airdrie are bottom of the Scottish Championship.
