There must be a few players who have signed the professional forms and never set foot on the turf.

Easy start - Bruce Grobbelaar. (oddly missing from Rageonline)

He left us the next day to sign for Sheffield Wednesday and never played for them either. :)

In fact, it seems to happen a lot with goalkeepers. Anyone remember Tony Malessa? He was on loan from Bristol City (I think) as cover and was on the bench for the first game at the Kassam

Did that young Spanish lad ever place for us? Think he was training to be a doctor. Possibly signed under the Clotet regime.

Nigel Winterburn. Signed on a two year contract by Jim Smith in 1983. Jim decided after a few training sessions that he wasn't good enough. When his mate Harry Bassett (manager of Wimbledon) phoned him up and asked if he knew any left backs, Jim persuaded Bassett to take over Winterburn's contract. Winterburn went on to play over 650 games in the top flight, including 450+ games for Arsenal. And played for England. So, not Jim's best decision.

According to Wikipedia

"Xemi studies medicine at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. His older brother and sister are both doctors."

I also didn't realise he only made 9 appearances for us and left 6 months into his 3 year deal.

I saw him play in the 0-7 against Wigan. Massively out of his depth, and was subbed at HT. Absolutely no idea why Clotet signed him as a pro.
He scored a great goal early into his debut against Cheltenham in the cup. But then it went downhill

Was there a player that we signed from Sheffield Wednesday one summer (when we were in the old first division), but who never played due to injury? It's possible though that I have imagined this.
