Your positivity is infectiousA glorious 1-0 win for us, a Van Dyke own goal in the 89th minute and the only time we leave our half. Harry Kane is knocked unconscious in the first minute but Southgate leaves him on all game just in case the ball hits him and goes in, he recovers on the final whistle to say that's football and he is just glad he could play his part.
Its so obviously coming home that they should just the tournament now and give it to us, only UEFA corruption stopping that happening.
Good job England move the ball at pace then...They looked decent in their opener, but that was against the Poles who were insanely slow.
They do!Good job England move the ball at pace then...
Oh.
If the Dutch aren’t that good than everyone we’ve faced thus far are absolutely terrible! The Dutch aren't that good.
They looked decent in their opener, but that was against the Poles who were insanely slow. The French shut them down almost completely, then the Austrians deservedly beat them. They're only still here because (like us) they got a very easy knockout draw. They'd be on the golf course already if they'd been in the top half of the draw.
It'll still be tight, because Southgate will keep the handbrake firmly on. But I think we'll edge it by the odd goal or on pens.
They do!
When they're trailing by a goal and there's less than 10 minutes left.
If the Dutch aren’t that good than everyone we’ve faced thus far are absolutely terrible!
Holland are comfortably the best side that we will have come across up to this point…
But the Netherlands drew with France, smashed Romania and got past Turkey - although the loss to Austria is a black mark on their record, admittedly.I think they're about level with Switzerland. A bit more in attack, but less solid than the Swiss. The Swiss deservedly drew with Germany, and absolutely toyed with the Italians.
Which is why I think we'll win today - but also why, if we do, the step up in class to play Spain in the final will be absolutely eye-watering!
But the Netherlands drew with France, smashed Romania and got past Turkey - although the loss to Austria is a black mark on their record, admitI'd tedly.
Dumfries, De Vrij and Van Dijk are a class above the Swiss defence and I think Ake would get in their team too. And then on attack, Simons, Gakpo and Depay are more threatening than the Swiss attack I think.
If these Euros Holland and Switzerland played eachother 100 times, I think Holland would end up winning more than 50 times.
Akanji is good but he’s probably the only Swiss defender who would get in the Netherlands side, so you’re being very selective there! Agree with the Swiss Engine room being better but that’s it in terms of a composite XI - what’s that, 8-3 in favour of the Dutch?Manuel Akanji is easily better than De Vrij or Van Dijk at this point in their respective careers. Van Dijk was amazing in, like, 2017-20 and was robbed of the Ballon d'Or but he's past his best now. Still good no doubt, but no longer one of the top CBs in world football. But Akanji is.
And the Swiss engine room of Xhaka & Freuler is way better than Reijnders & Schouten for the Dutch.
I'd agree on the attack - Swiss were pretty average. But even then, Gakpo & Depay are not top, top players. We've seen them plenty, and they are only good enough to be bit-part players at top clubs. They're not the sort of world beaters that the Dutch have regularly had over the years. Xavi Simons is the only forward they have that you look at and think 'Yes, this guy could be world class'.....but even he is still young, and got farmed out on loan by PSG last year.
I still think - having watched all of the Dutch games in this tournament - that they are not a significant step up in quality from what we've already faced. We should win this game, and it will be a big-time failure if we don't.
Anyway, I agree that England are better all over the pitch and should win - but I still think they’re a noticeably better side than the Swiss (I’m convinced thery’d have won if the two sides had met).
We shall see!
I'm going to miss these posts next week. All this talk of players and quality, what a waste of words, only need 3 words
It’s coming home
I think his post has more holes in it than a .....I was curious if there was any recent evidence from Swiss-Dutch games.....and found out that they haven't played each other in a competitive international since Euro 96!
So we'll just have to argue about hypotheticals for ever more........
I'm going to miss these posts next week.
