International News Russian War With Ukraine

It’s 59 days before Trump returns to the White House.

While the decision to defend the west by taking a front foot approach with the deployment of missiles is understandable, the timing feels somewhat off.

After all, UK missiles going into Russia, regardless of who’s deploying them is essentially the UK attacking Putin’s Russia.

If retaliation comes from Putin during a changeover in the White House, could our safety and security be compromised?

If Trump pulls out of supporting Ukraine we should put our troops in. Russia would have a hissy fit but wouldn't think it serious enough to warrant nukes. We owe them one for killing people on our soil anyway.

If we want to get our groove back as a country that's one way of doing it.
You seem to have extraordinary insight into Mr Putin‘s mindset.

The people you usually like politically are quite supportive of old Vladimir

Is it the case these days we're unable to defend ourselves and we're absolutely reliant on the US?

I don’t imagine that in your case. And why is „side“ in quotation marks. You’ve just advocated putting our troops into Ukraine because you think it would “get our groove back as a country”

if you think large loss of life in an unwinnable war against a nuclear power would help “us” “get our groove back,” you must be an extremely peculiar person.

I don’t imagine you’ll be going to war yourself, though. People who have a hard on for war rarely do.

Blimey.

The Swiss get it so right..

You seem quite upset.

I just don't like Russia, and I don't think they should get off lightly for killing people on British soil. It seems you're not so bothered. That's fine.

Why does

I don’t see how anyone can hear accounts of the war in Ukraine- to say nothing of what’s happening in Gaza- without being upset.

That doesn’t mean that I think going to war is necessarily the right answer. Wars are a lot easier to start than to finish

When does somewhere become “British soil”by the way?

All very worrying
Seems to me about 99.9 % of the worlds population just want to provide for their families have somewhere decent to live and enough to get by. There are millions of people who are striving for this around the globe. Hunger oppression and war won’t let them achieve it.

It is that .1% who are warmongers sending boys /girls to die for what? Same as any war those megalomaniacs in power want more power
I fear this latest conflict will not end well

Anyone after a few pints!

Just wondering in the unlikely event of a missile being fired at the UK, would it be detected, is there capability to intercept it and how would people be alerted to take cover for example?

Didn't we have one of those alert thingy tests on our mobile phones a few years ago.

If I remember, it worked very well 🤔

Think I will just hot foot it down to the the village pub for a quick one.

I think it’s just the “ we should put our troops in” bit. There’s a lot behind that 6 words. A lot of British death (and expense) on foreign soil. Ukraine is one of those slogs of a war and it could be like “putting our troops” into the Somme to try and end wwi quickly.

He's just trolling, and he does it well.

Thing is, if Trump leaves NATO it's probably a dead duck. We'd have to go in with Germany, France, and other countries of that continent to form a defence union, not sure what we'd call the organization.

With respect, that is an analogy that has no reality. The difference between the Armed Forces of 1914 and 2024 is almost beyond measurement. The leadership, command, training and equipment backed with tactics and communications are worlds apart from what was deemed appropriate, and effective, in the previous century.

Can we use Afghanistan then?

LOL the other side are better as well

They lack training, cohesive command and rely on numbers - much like the tactics of WW1. They do have far greater numbers, of course. They also have a lot of tactical nuclear weapons and, it is conjectured, far fewer qualms about deploying.
Add in cyber warfare (already happening) and it would get very nasty, very quickly. It would need us to fight just as incisively.

Sound advice. Go to the Winchester, have a nice cold pint and wait for it all to blow over.

I do wonder if our politicians feel it'll never happen so there's no point in preparing or having contingency plans. Just like when a global pandemic wasn't going to happen...

Seems to me that we need a coalition of like-minded European countries to come together in an alliance. We could call it, I dunno, the European Union maybe
