International News Russian War With Ukraine

Anyone after a few pints!

Just wondering in the unlikely event of a missile being fired at the UK, would it be detected, is there capability to intercept it and how would people be alerted to take cover for example?

Didn't we have one of those alert thingy tests on our mobile phones a few years ago.

If I remember, it worked very well 🤔

Think I will just hot foot it down to the the village pub for a quick one.

You seem quite upset.

I just don't like Russia, and I don't think they should get off lightly for killing people on British soil. It seems you're not so bothered. That's fine.
I think it’s just the “ we should put our troops in” bit. There’s a lot behind that 6 words. A lot of British death (and expense) on foreign soil. Ukraine is one of those slogs of a war and it could be like “putting our troops” into the Somme to try and end wwi quickly.

He's just trolling, and he does it well.

Thing is, if Trump leaves NATO it's probably a dead duck. We'd have to go in with Germany, France, and other countries of that continent to form a defence union, not sure what we'd call the organization.

With respect, that is an analogy that has no reality. The difference between the Armed Forces of 1914 and 2024 is almost beyond measurement. The leadership, command, training and equipment backed with tactics and communications are worlds apart from what was deemed appropriate, and effective, in the previous century.

Can we use Afghanistan then?

They lack training, cohesive command and rely on numbers - much like the tactics of WW1. They do have far greater numbers, of course. They also have a lot of tactical nuclear weapons and, it is conjectured, far fewer qualms about deploying.
Add in cyber warfare (already happening) and it would get very nasty, very quickly. It would need us to fight just as incisively.

Sound advice. Go to the Winchester, have a nice cold pint and wait for it all to blow over.

I do wonder if our politicians feel it'll never happen so there's no point in preparing or having contingency plans. Just like when a global pandemic wasn't going to happen...

Seems to me that we need a coalition of like-minded European countries to come together in an alliance. We could call it, I dunno, the European Union maybe
