Uefa on verge of suspending Russia

Uefa is set to suspend Russian teams from all competitions in response to the invasion of Ukraine, according to a report Monday by German sports agency SID.
The first Russian team affected would be Spartak Moscow, who face RB Leipzig away in a Europa League last 16, first-leg tie on March 10.
The Russian women's national team would also be excluded from the European Championship due to be hosted by England this July.
According to SID, the decision to suspend Russia is supported by several national federations, including the powerful German and English associations.

That's quite a change from your usual cynical, seen-it-all, know-it-all, world view - I seem to remember that only two or three days ago that you were stating that sanctions would have no effect and then signed off with usual dismissive comment toward people making their protest view known and an inevitably, an emoji. In fact the following observations stuck in my mind:

We could turn off Russia`s participation in payment transactions - except Germany imports 55% of its gas from Russia ❌
We could target Putin and his inner circle with sanctions - doubt they`ll lose any sleep. ❌

Nope, lets all jump in Twitter, delete the #BLM stuff and replace it with #standwithukraine
Kick Russia out of Eurovision.
Cancel the F1.
Drop some sponsorship deals.

That`ll learn them..................... :

That's what weak, pacification and "one size fits all" pandering to minorities gets you kids. :)

Nice editing.

As ever it is the people that will suffer not those at the top of the tree.

Christ, that was quick. Did it go...

Russia: You surrender, we'll stop bombing.
Ukraine: No, you leave or we fight on.
Russia: OK then,
Ukraine: Don't let the door hit your a**e on the way out.

Just can't see Putin doing anything that will cause him to lose face.

Sorry. think that was a false alert, i saw a caption come up on Sky saying talks have concluded and now its gone.

IOC now asking all sports to ban Russian and Belarussian athletes and teams from international comps.

Does this mean the IOC are about to totally ban them and not let them continue to compete under "ROC"?

Nice editing, really? The whole unedited post is below - anything missing now?. Today you posted a bunch of stats that implied that sanctions and Swift limitations might be having some effect and Putin may be feeling the heat - measures that you had previously smugly pronounced, wouldn't have any effect. So you then change tack to say, what I really meant was 'well anyway, the people at the top won't suffer'.

Folk seem to forget we (The West) are limited in how we can intervene/help. Ukraine is not in the EU or Nato

We can supply tons of state of the art military hardware - to 18-year-old civilians who haven't been trained. ❌
We could take out the Russian airforce from across the border - except that is a direct act of war. ❌
We could bolster the EU/NATO borders. ✅

The Russians have taken to openly indiscriminately firing into civilian centres with rockets and artillery. I don't think captured Russians will be treated with as much courtesy for long if that continues.

at last FIFA grow a pair ....of sorts,...... suspension isn't a ban, - IF things get sorted planned qualifiers etc can still potentially take place
Simple solution. Kick Russia out, replace them with the best performing third placed team from qualifying (Norway and Albania both got 18 points, but Norway have a better GD so give it to them)

"Priti 'Vacant' Patel says some MPs are calling for visa waivers for Ukrainians.

But she says she will not agree to that...She says, on the basis of security advice, they need to stay. She says Russians are infiltrating Ukrainian forces, and she says extremist groups are active in the war zone."

Jeez... The ones you need to watch are those bidding to play tennis with your fellow party members, who own English football clubs & swan around London-grad in their Bentleys!

Some of us are not set in our ways you see.

We don`t inhabit echo chambers with those of a similar ilk.

Makes for a better person, you might want to try it.
I think most people can see you've been hoisted by your own petard here.

Some folk might feel discretion is the better part of valour at this point and withdraw.

Others continue to flap their gums in a vain and ultimately doomed attempt to save face....[emoji6]

So we know the reason Russia's nuclear alert level has been raised (aggressive comments from NATO members, apparently).

So who would make such comments that could rile the Kremlin and heighten tensions.

Turns out it was none other than Liz Truss and probably attributed to her comments around supporting British Nationals to go and fight in Ukraine.

Whilst she was later forced to row back on the "support" bit, it just goes to show how poorly chosen words can have serious consequences.

And why you need competent adults in charge of important offices of state like the FO.....
And I doubt very much that her comments attributed to Russia raising the Nuclear threat.

Patel has a hard on for screwing refugees over though.

And they’re using cluster bombs in the rockets, they’re just barbaric. One bomb has droplet bombs that disperse and then detonate. They’re banned under the Geneva Convention so yet more war crimes added to his list, not that he’ll ever be charged or face account if his actions.
