Ok, lets get this straight, Ireland lost, but it was a great first game in charge for the Irish manager whose team won 2-0 with goals from the two ex-Republic of Ireland players.

You mean the three Irishmen who have English accents, were born and bred in England and only qualified through Irish grandparents? Nice to get a bit of revenge for Euro 88 when England a lost to England b though.

Carsley isn’t going to get the England job full time, doesn’t really bother me if he won’t sing the national anthem but you wonder why he didn’t take the Ireland job when offered it if he has a problem with it.

How can you talk about England losing to England b in Euro 88 when the Ireland goal scorer was that wonderful Scottish player we all love so much?

I disagree that Carsley won’t get the job full time. Unless the FA pay top money for Howe then I don’t see another option. He is also very highly thought of within the game.

He never sung the Irish national anthem when he played for them either. I couldn’t care less if the manager sings it or not.

England B plus Scotland.

I like the Tony Cascarino story that he got in by the grandfather rule, but found out later that his Irish grandfather wasn’t actually his grandfather, he had an Italian name, had never been to Ireland before playing for them and had no Irish blood at all.

You might not but, like it or not, I’d hope the FA are smart enough to realize that it’s such bad PR that he’d be on a hiding to nothing straight away with media and fans.

Does it now to be one of the interview questions, ‘Will you sign the national anthem?’.
I’d rather appoint someone on their coaching ability and whether they have the skills to get us over the line in a final.

Capello never sung it the national anthem either.

Jude Bellingham,Harry Kane, & a couple of other players, could of qualified for Ireland as well. That doesn't take into account other player's who could play for other nations, because of their heritage...what is English, birth or blood??. Birth does, blood does, I'm confused 🤷🏻‍♂️😂

You even had a ginger, Marco,Gabiadini

No but with Capello it was so blantantly obvious he was from Alaska.

Well done Liam Parsley, or whatever his name is. I don’t care about flags, anthems, poppies etc but a big part of being England manager is representing the country, and so refusing to sing the song seems an odd stand to take .

Is it, or is it yet another manufactured issue to make people angry?

If we had a chance of getting Pep as the next England manager, and he managed us to World Cup victory, would anyone give a s**t if he didn't sing the national anthem? Does anyone expect Lewis Hamilton to sing the German national anthem when he wins in a Mercedes? Or the Italian if he wins with Ferrari? If you moved to America for work, would you sing the Stars and Stripes proudly?

It's such a non-story generated by the Daily Mail, who supported the rise of fascism across Europe in the 1930's.

Mentioned it before but Cascarino’s auto-biography Full Time is, unexpectedly, one of the great sport books.

I have read it, long time ago but remember it being very good. Very honest and well written. We even get a mention as a bunch of horrible farming accented yokels at the Manor who he tries to get one up on but then loses.

Of course it’s a bit of a non story. But Pep is an actual foreigner, you wouldn’t expect him to sing the anthem. Parsley is some kind of Brit (haven’t followed his genealogy) so it’s a bit different.

A manufactured story by journalist (s) who want someone else as England manager instead of the one appointed.....

If he said he won’t sing it cos he’s a proud Irishman and remembers the Easter rising I’d be fine with it, but instead he’s done some weird havering about needing to focus on the game.

That would be a problem for me, I don’t mind him not singing it because he just doesn’t want to, not a fan of enforced singing, but if you have a problem politically with the UK and you are a proud Irishman etc then you shouldn’t be managing the England football team, he actually had the Ireland job offered to him so he can’t be that proud though.

Personally I think international football teams should be managed by a person who comes from/identifies themselves as from that country, whole point of international football. Can see why the minnows like Qatar, American Samoa and Scotland might need a foreign coach to help with developing the game there but not England. We should able to develop our own managers, just lazy not to.

Carsley obviously ticks the being from England box and we developed him (not getting the job based on his name or playing career) but the question is does identify himself as English? Given the history between the nations involved it’s a bit complicated.

Maybe he's just a republican like a large number of people in the country, myself proudly being one.

Bit of a difference between being an English republican and Irish republican when it comes to managing the England football team though?

I don’t care about the royal family much one way or the other, first few seasons of the Crown on Netflix were good but never bother with the funerals or any of that nonsense. But I don’t have sympathy with anyone who would try to blow them up either, that’s a bit of a problem for the England football manager.

Woah that escalated! Ever considered a job at the Daily Mail?

Why it is not possible to feel you are both Irish and English? It's 2024, it's perfectly reasonable, given the amount of immigration in the world, to feel you belong equally to two nations. Sure when reaching the level of international sports person you would have to choose one to represent but the idea you can only be one nationality is wrong in my view.

I think Morrisey even wrote a song about it.
