Ref Watch Referee Farai Hallam - Oxford vs Millwall

Thought he was one of best referees we’ve seen for ages. Didn’t get in the way of a game of football taking place.
It was the first time I've ever given the Ref a 5 star rating, I believe even Sarge gave him 4 stars.

All the millwall discourse seems to be whinging about the ref so probably 4 or 5 stars
They seemed unhappy about shemmys goal being in the 5th minute of 5 minutes added on for some reason? even though they had enough time to b****r up an attack after that...and they made a substitution during extra time so the goal probably came from the ref just adding a bit more on because of them?

When their player sat down "injured" during the added time, I timed it, and the delay was 90 seconds. I said to my mate that I bet the ref doesn't add the whole 90 seconds back on. Well, he did, and it was during that 90 extra seconds that we scored, so karma in my opinion.

Some of the ridiculous comments on social media from Millwall fans really are pathetic. They claim that no extra time should have been added on for their player getting treatment, as the ref had already signalled 5 extra minutes, and that it is all a conspiracy from the EPL to stop them getting promoted as the EPL clubs are scared of them! They're both stupid and deluded.

to misquote their song, they don't like it, no-one cares.

Agree. Certainly the stand out referee since we've been back in the Championship, he was excellent. There was no refereeing by guesswork, he gave what he saw and I thought the game had a great flow to it because of that. Our equaliser, the time it came and the time he allowed from the restart was all bang on time. I don't think either manager can have any cause for complaint, Neil was moaning at something at full time and it might have been the softness of the Millwall challenge that gave Cam the free kick leading to the passage of play from which we equalised - I don't think it was the most brutal of challenges but the vast majority of referees are giving that and the vast majority of managers would be calling for it too, Neil included if it was the other way around.

I’ve seen this chap in a few games this season and he’s been excellent every time. Good to see a young ref come through that seems a long throw from the tragic standards we’ve become used to in the EFL.

All I really want in a ref is consistency and control which he had in spades, and it made for a good contest. Really does make such a difference when a referee isn’t central in the game.

Having watched some highlights over the weekend and the penalties given for just a pure freak bounce of the ball, I can’t believe how long it’s been since we had one. Quite incredible.

Just read he's an ex pro in the lower leagues here and in Spain - not sure he ever made it onto the pitch as a professional but the fact he's been in amongst proper football environments might explain the really good understanding he had of the game, as opposed to those non player referees who manage games straight from the manual with no feel for what's going on.

I forgot about that! Youre completely right, that makes the whinging even worse lmao.
Its a bit scary how quickly a fanbase can get deluded with just doing well for a fraction of the season, theyre already acting like theyre owed something

They are Millwall

As mentioned in the match thread, I found his lack of cautions frustrating. I don't have a problem with holding back on yellow cards but their left back did a blatant, cynical foul when Stan Mills was going into the area. Any other game that was a yellow and their left back is immediately under pressure for most of the game. We've had players booked for far less cynical challenges on the half way line.

Also, he seemed to have a serious problem spotting shirt pulling, even particularly obvious ones. Sam Long had a large triangle formed from his shirt by the Millwall player on the 2nd goal who then briefly got the ball back. The Ref had a clear view based on live and TV replays. This also doesn't change that Will Vaulks should have cleared the ball anyway.

The above wasn't a one off, the number of shirt triangles off the back of players were that obvious at times. One, at the Fence End, was being held at the height of the Oxford player's head and could clearly be seen from the East Stand.

I'm not suggesting we weren't doing it as well but those stuck in my head as they weren't subtle in any way.

I thought he was brilliant. There were bits and pieces - I thought we got a couple of soft ones and he could have been less lenient when their no 10 shoved Currie towards the hoardings, but the best refereeing performance we’ve had since promotion.

Saturdays ref was one of the best referees Ive witnessed in the Championship
Agreed. However he did have the benefit of eyes in the back of his head. Seemingly he was organising the wall for the last free kick and still noticed Cam had tried to move the ball 2 foot to the right. All round excellent refereeing.

Yeah I noticed that too. I think Cam was going to have another stab at it but knew he would get caught. I think sometimes players try and move the spray with the ball at the same time but that deception takes a bit more organisation.
As far as the time element is concerned I am pretty sure he added a bit on for that booking in time added on which was karma for time wasting.

I`m not sure ANY referee penalises shirt pulling and it really riles me.

However he was certainly a very good & competent referee and one of the best we`ve had for a long time.
