National Politics 🔴 The Labour Party

Please tell me you're being sarcastic. I genuinely can't tell. (It's early)

:ROFLMAO:.

I think there should be a caveat here.

Free fat jabs for a year and if you still haven't lost sufficient weight you forego free access.

PR no thanks the system went have is simple and you know who.yoj vote for unlike PR where it's secret lists of friends of the party or old fogees of the party you wouldn't vote for!

Pension as someone due it soon ISH. Should be if needed, when it was brought in it wasn't thought we'd be living to 80-90, plus vast numbers on benefits. People who don't need it should be able to opt out of a pension, and opt back in if their situation changes. Triple lock needs to go and be replaced with Earnings so pensioners are in same place as workers.

No, can't see it. And the Lord's would surely shoot it down anyway. There just isn't time this term to get it drafted, put to vote, clear the Lord's and get enacted. Even if it somehow passed, it would take years to get details done with Europe, and in that time he would be voted out and the process stopped by whoever was in power at the time. If by some miracle he won the next election despite having done what you say, it could then be argued that he had mandate because the election would have become a single issue vote.
He won’t try this term but I could see the groundwork being put in place. The Lords…( wish we could get rid of that anachronism) have little part in enabling useful legislation so wouldn’t present much of an obstacle.
Although of course, given the EUs tardiness in dealing with anything legislative it could be held up for years…can but hope.
I have a feeling unless the right unite by the next election we could be subjected to another five years of left wing socialism with all that entails…hoping not and that common sense prevails in the end.

I certainly hope not, although I don't necessarily agree. He could certainly lay a lot of groundwork, for which he has no mandate.

They are not illegitimate from a constitutional perspective but from a moral and ethical standpoint they most certainly are illegitimate. Sorry but cannot abide politicians who U-turn on manifesto pledges. Case in point the Lib Dems who did it on uni fees back in 2010, absolute forever scumbags for that one IMO.
Completely agree on the tuition fees U-turn because they made it such a central plank of election campaign and it will have earned them possibly millions of votes. However, in general, we should be wary of any promises made by political parties and we have a personal responsibility to listen very carefully to the words they use and how they respond to questioning. If they keep shrugging off questions, distracting, changing the question, attacking the interviewer be very careful as they are hiding something.

This sounds at odds with the current legislation, whereby if you evict a tenant on the grounds that you want to sell your rental property, you can not then re-let that property for a 12 month period.

So, if you try to sell when the market is very poor you can't just take the property back off the market and try to re-let until 12 months have passed without facing a very hefty penalty.

The other issue of course is the Council Tax premium being applied to empty properties, which may come down to 6 months, currently 12 months, I believe.

Potentially a catch 22 situation looming for LL wanting to exit the rental market when the housing market is poor.

A barmy situation where you potentially have LL's who cant re-let and improve rental supply in the market at a time where supply is crucial, yet being penalised for having an empty property in the process.
The situation for us we have a property that has just had tenants leave after being given plenty of notice.
The challenge is we still have after a couple of months is that the tenants still have not cleared their rubbish way. We are now having to use their £1000 deposit to clear and clean. The property needs updating to the tune of £50000 according to a potential buyer according to their builder. The property is worth around £250K in reasonable condition. Of course the current property market is poor, but landlords are not being cut any slack at all.
All the time of course there are plenty of empty business properties that could be converted into habitable premises.
I’ll be pleased to see the back of the buy to let, and of course all the bottom fishers joining the property market.

Sounds like someone is low balling you, £50k is some fairly serious updating. Particularly if it's in reasonable condition as you have said.

Which are unfortunately worth more empty as retail properties than they are as homes. I've always thought they should be turned into homes, but I gather a large amount of our pensions are sunk into these kind of properties and the money lost (even if it's vacant) means that it's better to leave them as they are.

That’s what we both think. It’s only a 2 bedroom back to back terrace. With the best will in the world I can’t see how even a new bathroom, central heating and double glazed windows can cost that. It’ll sell but our concern is that going into autumn interest will be low, as dark evenings prevail.

True back to back terraces are quite rare now aren't they?? I thought there were just a few left in Yorkshire nowadays. I've always wanted to see one!

?? I think you need to read a bit about how PR works. We have STV here for MPs in Oz, and I get to vote a ranked list. If my top pick gets knocked out, then my 2nd pick is used. If my second pick is knocked out then my 3rd pick is used etc etc. There is no secret list and I can vote or not vote for any individual regardless of their party. Senate voting is similar but if I want I can choose to just vote for a party rather than an individual, but if there is an individual that I hate in my favourite party I can construct my vote to put them last.

They are rare. It’s obviously a way of the builders shoehorning as many homes in as they can. If you’d like to buy it I’ll PM you the details 😄

That’d explain the number of pubs left derelict around the country now. I know of one that’s at least twenty years empty

I'm not sure on pubs, certainly heard it about retail units. I know a few years ago a lot of pubs were being picked up by supermarket chains as convenience stores. There was a benefit as there was already a licence on the premises which meant that the supermarket didn't need to get permission for a new alcohol licence etc.

Certainly, in Abingdon, the Fitzharris Arms and The Ox were both turned into Tesco Express. I think it was a similar story in other parts of the county.

You own a second property that you can either invest in and then rent out or sell, or sell as it is. That's what being a landlord is all about isn't it? Beyond needing to do the things a landlord will always need to do I don't see the problem. And if it is a problem it's a problem I'd feel lucky to have.

No objection here to being part of the single market................ its what we voted to join in 1975.

The vote in 2016 was to escape the clutches of the ever expanding parasite the EU has become.

The Fitzharris Arms was criminal as it looked a viable pub always being busy. Especially with The Ox already being open and close by.

He doesn’t respect the democratic will of the people in the EU referendum, and has always criticised the outcome and has expressed his intention to rejoin.

He's expressed a desire to rejoin the EU but not an intention as far as I can see.

What basis do you have for stating that "He doesn’t respect the democratic will of the people in the EU referendum"?

Fox and Hounds on Abingdon Rd; did have a derelict phase and a fire between times though tbf.

Agreed! Thought I'd read/heard this was one of the main reasons:

It’s funny how all governments well Labour and Tory plan things get the audience in all a frenzy but very things they’re going to do. Next Parliament the triple lock will go and a new national care service will start on 10 years. Wonder what happens if the Labour party lose the next election and the Tories regain power…..well this policies Burnham announced won’t happen and we will still be out of Europe.

This is why there needs to be cross party agreement on such huge issues otherwise the problem keeps getting kicked down the road.

He said as much on Sunday and he is absolutely right.

I wish it was that easy. The amount of profit is nowhere at the level,I’m sure you feel it is.
The mortgage still has to be paid as do the rates.
There are far better returns elsewhere

Even if your don't make a profit after mortgage and other costs you still get a house bought for you! Why should you be entitled to double bubble when others can't afford to buy one house in the first place?

You really are unbelievable.
You sound envious of anyone who likes to better themselves, but like Burnham wanting to help out others that can’t be bothered to do so.

Because presumably through a combination of working to earn it, prudent saving or perhaps inheritance or marrying someone with their own house, they’re able to?

I don’t understand the chip on the shoulder you have for people that have obtained a bit more for themselves. You don’t seem to consider any of the sacrifice or circumstance, you just think the universe owes everyone something regardless of effort and want a flatline economy.

Can I ask. All these people you want supported in to first homes or to take (seemingly limitlessly) from the welfare system - how do you think that gets paid for? Something to consider before laying in to people that pay in.

"Why should you be entitled to roast dinner and sticky toffee pudding if I'm eating beans on toast? It's not fair!"

Nothing wrong with beans on toast. Good to eat after a long run. And one of the few things I'll put tomato ketchup on.
