FWIW I think McSweeney should shoulder a lot of blame for Starmer's political mis-steps and abysmal public perception. But if McSweeney had denied making mistakes - like Liz Truss did - you'd be honking about that too, FFS. There's no chance of grown-up government when any attempt at reflection or, god forbid, admission of imperfection is weaponised by the opposition.

I've read the article. Political Thinking is one of the better political programmes around IMO. It leaves out the adversarial "I'm sorry that's all we have time for" and gotchas of the god-awful Today programme, and the silly yah-boo tribalism and prepared soundbites, and allows politicians (of all parties) to be honest, explain how they were thinking, and yeah, admit mistakes sometimes.

But yeah, f**k that, let's dumb everything down and score some cheap points.

FWIW I think McSweeney should shoulder a lot of blame for Starmer's political mis-steps and abysmal public perception. That would be the same for previous Govts as well. Cameron blamed Labour and then the Tories blamed the previous Tory PM as if they weren't part of it at some point.

Johnson wanted to cut taxes and increasing spending as part of his ‘levelling up’ agenda. Its why Javed resigned!

Problem we have is that politicians are more scared of future consequences, that might not happen, than cracking on and doing brave things.

You can`t make an omelette without cracking a few eggs.

Ah, Boris Johnson. The UK's version of Trump (albeit with fewer coups). He was strongly anti-Brexit initially until he saw an opportunity to jump on a vote catching bandwagon. Even old-school Tories like Ted Heath and John Major would argue that people need to look after each other or society would fall apart. Community is the most important gel holding everything together, especially in this current time of division and internal and external threats.

Little more than stripping out funding for local things and handing them over to volunteers or closing them.
The Big Society Network charity that was supposed to manage it ended up being wound up after 4 years.

Locally the Labour Council have "saved" local kids adventure playgrounds by giving them £2 million .......... that is a 50% year on year reduction in the poorest areas of the City.

You look hard enough they are all pretty at making ideas hit the ground and work.

Yet across the country there are plenty of people volunteering and creating that community cohesion WITHOUT interference from "government".

Saturday was our village litter pick, 30+ people bimbling about collecting litter and meeting at the Library for tea & biscuits.....all ages, all welcome and a huge range of different people. That is society at work.
