I think Norway is a good place to start.
Had a very similar economy to the UK in 1980 didn’t privatise everything and now has a way stronger economy.

I’m saying close loopholes so that they pay their share. Why should someone who works the same you and I work get away with not paying tax? Should they pay more percentage that you and me … no we have a fair basis of tax in the Uk and they should pay it.

Tax avoidance should stop now.

I would agree on gas and electricity in January 1980 both were in public ownership.
Maggie flogged it off and now its”the market” tat dictates that we should pay more and other than paying our bills there isn’t a lot the government can do about it. Don’t forget that she also flogged off trains. Water and council houses ( banning councils from using the proceeds to build more council houses) and BT
Farage wants do sell off the NHS and make us pay insurance for that too so just watch what you’re hoping for,

Tony Blair’s government accepted those decisions ( they were hugely popular at the time) and I think stabilised the country. Low unemployment good growth strong education and NHS, both well funded and improved ready for the next 10 years. Then a global economic crash and 10 years of austerity then covid and we’re basically f**ked . I didn’t think it would be fixed by now but I did expect green shoots and a country starting to feel like things were getting better.

I think most of us are disappointed with this government we wanted a change from the sleaze of the tories and we were hoping things would be better and neither seems to be the case.

I don’t think changing prime minister will make any difference, and the labour government have a big majority and 3.5 years ( labour ain’t going anywhere) but like the rest of us I do want to see things getting better for us down here and so far it isn’t.

In politics is it better to stick to the devil you know rather than the devil you don’t! The world is changing especially in recent years, we loose faith after scandal after scandal, are decent people now in the minority, I really hope not !

How many times have we seen councillors saying that they stand with Ukraine?
What is the difference?

What is wrong with showing support for a world issue?
Does it not show the calibre of someone and show where their morals stand?

Because I can’t change the world should it stop me from trying to point out when I think someone isa racist or Islamophobe?

Im going to try and refrain from posting on the news section until the next general election result.

I will leave the left hand gang to their thinly veiled classism and "look how much better I am than reform voters" "tax the billionaires" fun until then.

Remember though the secret Tory phenomena is very real. People will believe their eyes and ears and the next general election won't go the way they want it to until there's a left wing operation that takes immigration seriously and has a genuine plan beyond eat the rich.

100% if labour don't get there act together i can see Nigel with the keys to number 10.

Because it will attract a particular vote if you back the "right" team on that particular issue.

At the recent hustings the independent candidate said "I`m standing as a local councillor on local issues not Palestine" .... pretty much sealed his fate.

It is a very simple vote grab that has nothing to do with the issues they are elected to deal with. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

In the same way a local councillor is "supporting Palestine", a former local resident is retaining an interest in where said councillors stand on the local issues they are elected to support/resolve. At the moment very little of that is being discussed because they are too busy talking about a country far,far away.

Maybe it's just because I'm older and more miserable (it probably is) but I used to watch question time and quite enjoy it. I haven't seen it in years now because all that happens is:

Left wing guest says left wing soundbite. Left wing audience members clap like seals.

Right wing guest says right wing soundbite. Right wing guests clap like seals.

Before Brexit seemed to reveal we are two tribes who hate each other I am sure it was better than that.

Not just slagging off QT there. Other political panel shows I used to watch are the same.

Even news satire programmes I used to watch I cannot imagine enjoying now like Mock the Week.

Obviously it's probably just because I'm grumpy but still. I think there's a point there.

Debate shows are so pointless now. The only political content I enjoy is podcasts where they get someone on and they explain what they think in long form without point scoring boringness.

To be fair even though a lot of people hate him the last "debate style" political media I enjoyed was Steven Bartletts podcast. He had Gary Stevenson debating Daniel Priestley.

There was some angry exchanges granted but they did let each other speak and because it's long form both explained there position without just saying soundbites they know their supporters like to hear.

It's below if anyone's interested. I'm not a Steven Bartlett fan I just think the debate was good.



*Edit": overarching point was that YF just reflects society as a whole which is angrier and more divided than ever.
