Haven't been drinking or gone out for a meal in Oxford in a long time.

Any recommendations as asking for somebody else who is visiting for the first time (other than the Kassam)?

Centre of town and do meals include all cuisines?

Antep Kitchen or Arbequina on the Cowley Road are lovely. To be honest, you'll struggle to find a bad restaurant down there.

The Bear or The Crown for pubs are always a good shout. Turf Tavern can be good if it's not infiltrated by woke, annoying uni students.

Depends on your standard required. Not really much to recommend in the city. The Oxford Kitchen in Summertown got good reviews a few years ago, no idea if they have maintained their standards. The Oxford Kitchen They claim a 1 star Michelin rating but this can be deceiving. (Eaten at a 1 star place that was appalling!)
If you wanted a good but inexpensive lunch, then I would head for the Greek places in the Covered Market. Huge portions and very cheap.
Once upon a time you could get a decent meal at Browns Restaurant Bistro but, again, haven't been there in years.

We tend to stick to places outside Oxford. The White Hart at Fyfield (off the A420) is excellent and is Michelin listed.

If you really want to push the boat out, Le Manoir is the best but, you'll need a very, very healthy bank balance to go there!

Pub that was founded by woke, annoying uni students is infiltrated by woke, annoying uni students. Shock.

The Oxford Kitchen was pleasant but is long gone in its michelin-star restaurant form unfortunately, I think it's some kind of deli these days.

Pompette round the corner on South Parade I've always found very nice for French food - not cheap but then what is these days.

I also recommend Antep Kitchen Cowley Road.
Best Turkish I’ve been too, not too far from the ground. And no need to book.

Agree on Arbequina being nice.

The Magdalen Arms on Iffley Road is good for beer and food (amazing pies). The Chester is brilliant for its steak platter and do a brilliant range of local ales. It can get busy in there though. Rusty Bike and The Fir Tree good for pints.

If you're heading into Jericho there is plenty there if you can put up with the posh students.

Thanks for the update. That's a shame that it has gone. William Sitwell reviewed it for the Telegraph back in 2019. Presumably Covid did for it like so many places.
Pompette sounds interesting, will have to give that a try sometime. Anywhere that can serve a proper 'Steak frites' deserves a chance!

Recently had a meal at Namaste, a new Indian restaurant by Malmaison in the castle quarter. Highly recommended - brilliant food, decent prices, lovely ambience and friendly, couteous servers.
Another Indian place that's worth checking out is Chutneys on the corner of St Michael Street and New Inn Hall Street, while Dishoom is meant to be good but I've not been there yet.
Sorry, all I can speak to is curry houses!

Thaikhun on George Street is very nice and we also like Victors on top of The Westgate,
That reminds me, Anghrid Thai, just round the corner from Thaikhun, is brilliant. More of a cafe vibe than a restaurant, but the food is as good as any other Thai restaurant in the city.
And if you're into Chinese, Jin Jin opposite the O2 on Cowley Road is 🔥

Centre or walkable from and all cuisines, cheers.

Thanks to all in advance.

Walton street is walkable if you are fit and able, decent choice along there.
What’s the age range going? Not being offensive but if I go out with different people/groups I find that can have a bearing on what people like?

He's 30-40 range. Down for work.

When I was that age I enjoyed Walton street., vicky arms, Jericho tavern and Jude the obscure are a good little run of pubs and you have some nice places to eat.

But then again when I was that age I enjoyed pretty much anywhere.

For the life of me I cannot think of the name of this pub . From Carfax cross the road walk a short way down Cornmarket , on the right was a courtyard with an old carriage leading to the pub think Lyon’s Coffee House was next door .

Had a good burger at Bretts near the station.

A while back. 😐
I actually remember that! Bloody amazing chilli burger. Used to be an old shed like construction with smoke pouring out of a chimney wedged into the roof! It was worth getting shitfaced just to try one! Great shame when they went. Nothing comparable since.

The Golden Cross? Closed about 30 years ago?

Even if they weren't allowed to mention Muck-donalds.

Surely that's on the left from Carfax.

Probably, I was just thinking courtyard, only the chequers, Crown and Turf Tavern that are still around have had that, Turl bar on Turl street did but that’s student accommodation now, must be before my 90s drinking days.
