Never mind Mills, I haven't bloody forgiven them for 1964. That goal was a mile offside (according to Ron Atkinson) and we could have made the semi final with a decent shout against Swansea at Villa Park.

I would’ve thought it was fairly obvious?

Preston - continually trying low ball offers. Clearly didn’t want to pay what we felt he was worth. Have come across as a little tinpot. A decidedly average Championship team for many years. Never really challenge and likely looking at a relegation battle this year.

Mills - asked to leave for a team who I envisage will be relegated. I don’t really understand why he’d choose Preston. Think he should’ve aimed higher. Refused to play for us.

I don’t dislike Preston, I’d just find it amusing to see them struggle and then have the same player they courted this summer do the same to them next year.

Reminds me a bit of the obsession some Huddersfield fans seemed to have with us when Helik and then Spencer joined us. Comes across as small time and petty really. There are far more hateable clubs in the championship.

I’d concede I'm the latter……but I was not and never claimed to be the former.

I want them to get relegated because it would be funny to have the ridiculousness of Stan Mills’ decision to leave us for a struggling, poor Championship side starkly confirmed, rather than any idea that they’ve done something wrong as a club.

And I don’t care how many po-faced hand-wringers complain that I shouldn’t want it - I do. I also don’t care that much, I just think it would be funny and ironic.

Had it not been for the embargo, Stan would've been long gone and I dare say never played for us this season. Whilst the whole saga was unprecedented and it may leave a bitter taste, it's all a bit petty isn't it?

Was it Phil Gilchrist who left us for Leicester, after playing one or two league games for us at the start of the season, way back when?

Don't remember the same level of animosity towards Leicester at the time...or since....but then we didn't have forums like this to amplify such issues did we!

It’s not Preston, it’s Mills. He was more than happy to sign a well paid contract after Everton told him he was no longer wanted and we gave him a chance. Then when things don’t go the way he or his advisors like, he downs tools. He’s gone from a favourite of many to persona non grata and I think fans at every club would feel exactly the same. I have no issue with PNE just a professional player who has acted very unprofessionally. Rules should be put in place to prevent this from happening.

But only because this was a completely unique situation. He wanted out at the end of last season when we got relegated. He got a move agreed, only for it to be jeopardised by the clubs own mismanagement.

If we hadn't fallen foul of SCMP thanks to the clubs own ineptitude, this wouldn't be an issue, so I find it a bit rich to blame it all on the actions of one player. He was always going and we've got much bigger problems we need to face up to as a fan base.

Oh come on. This thread is a long tradition of those temporary rivalries that tend to have a single trigger event. Just off the top of my head I can recall similar threads on this forum and its various iterations:

Why is this thread any different? Preston aren’t a rival but fans feel annoyed at Mills for his way of going about things, pissed off at PNE for their lowball offers and bemused that he’s opted for a side that look like they may well struggle and be back in the situation he’s found himself in already.

They’re not Swindon (not even Reading) but they can be the villain de jour for now. I’m enjoying the schadenfreude as they sit on three defeats from three for their league campaign.
