Matches Pre-Season Friendly v Southampton (31/07/2024)

Impressive. On to Palermo. Hopefully we can get a bigger crowd in for that. Then the real stuff begins!

Wonder if the same people who said we was relegation fodder after losing to Mansfield will say we are promotion material after that.

My feet are firmly on the ground. I said we were top 4 last season. We finished just short, and this season I think 18th is a real possibility. It’s not a strong Championship like last season.

I’m taking the P**s. There was an awful lot of negativity after Mansfield.
I was being sarcastic. PSF’s mean very little when it comes to results. Out of 90 minutes we played Southampton’s 1st team for 30 minutes.

It will be a long hard season but I do think we have enough about us to stay up and have made some excellent signings so far.

We have plenty more to come in as well so we are far from the finished article.

Tactically I thought we were really good tonight even if it was a friendly. Playing like that will at the very least keep us in games and give us chances in return. The question remains who will do the real damage when the ball is won? At the moment it’s Rodrigues which says a lot about what we have in forward areas. We’ve got to pick up a couple of genuine goal threats if we can.

What was the quality of the opposition please? It's important. If we beat reserves % youth, it means little

Southampton's 1st team played our reserves and our reserves did better.

Some very good performances thus evening.
Voges to me looks a teriffic player. Breaks up play, gets stuck in and good passing.
Some of the young players look better every season and hopefully a couple will be ready for the first team squad next season. Golding looked very good against some quality players in the second half ( Armstrong came on at half time), Johnson didn't play today but always looks good when I see him and GO'D looks stronger and quicker this season.
Promising.

I don't understand the people who seem keen to write off GO'D. He's still young and he's improved a lot.

Still got 5/6 more to come in .We know it's going to be tough the aim is to stay up 50 points needed. Hopefully 2/3 to come in before the season starts 🙏

I did a very quick search for mid table but I don't doubt there will be dozens of similar examples. You were banging this drum for months which was further in the season with a different manager and players, I think it holds a bit more weight than a pre season guess when you're weeks away from the window closing.

If we had kept sliding down the table, as you predicted, you'd have said you got that right too, so you probably had positions 1-16 covered.

I've got a mate who if you watch a penalty shootout together he'll confidently state "keeper will save this one" or "he'll put this to the left" and when it happens every now and then he'll say "told you, knew it". Making multiple guesses with wildly different outcomes makes it pretty likely you'll get a fair few right but it's not something you can then come back to and claim to be some sort of guru.

Having said that I do think we could finish around that mark and I'd be delighted if we did. We need some serious reinforcement at the top end and I'd like another centre back too but we've made some good moves and crucially it all looks to be joined up thinking which is pleasant change of pace from half a decade of Robinson's kid ina sweet shop, scattergun approach. There are always going to be teams who have a bit of a disaster, as long as we maximise what we have we'll have a great shot but it's a massive ask to be getting into the top half.

We won 2 0 and whilst we had little worth whole possession we stood up and held the press well

Not going to say anymore about the performance but there were some obvious take outs

Trialist weak, not quick and could be considered busy BUT not for me.

RR, been very critical of his casual style but today a strong workman like performance. Good

Cummings retaining his end of season form. Good

TG not a winger

Will V . Big and strong. Could be a shrewd signing.

Cam B always up for any game in an Oxford shirt.

Long. Same traits especially in never looking for that positive forward ball.

I end with the real find of the day. GOLDING. That boy whilst maybe still too young , looks the real deal and a fine prospect. You heard it here first.

Will clearly need more wide men and a stronger centre forward. I believe Buckingham has said the same.

Conclude. A 5 out of 10 night.

Are you talking about Vaulks? I think he's our best midfielder since Brannigan or Ruffles.
