Player of the season

It’s hard this season because no-one has been consistent through out the season, BDK would have been top at Christmas but obviously been injured since. Long has been the closest in terms of consistency but no obvious stand out performances. Mills is the one since the turn of the year who looks like the one who can make a positive difference in a game, so may be recency bias but think Mills is the only obvious candidate.

In a team that are second bottom (to the worst championship side on record who also had an 18 point deduction) if we had a few players who had been consistently good the rest of the team would have to be Sunday league level for us to have had the season we have.
 
Maybe a more robust way of getting to a player of the season would be to average out each players rating in the match day threads (possibly only those with a certain number of appearances).

Would be interesting to see how this correlates.

Yes really. For me, the POTS award goes to the player who has been consistently good all season. For me, only Mills comes close to that. Each of the other players you’ve mentioned have performed well in spells, but not on a regular basis IMO.

I really wanted to vote for Currie but he’s been in and out of the team, very good at times and weak at other times.

All this is representative of a team which has been at the wrong end of the table for pretty much all of the season and without a worthwhile run of success in the cups. It’s not a slight on a handful of other Us players like the ones you’ve mentioned, just an obvious reflection that we’ve been consistently inconsistent all year.

He certainly has done well.

I am not surprised with the current three, Stan, Will and Sam. Those are my three too.

I would be interested in this.
BDK would presumably be quite high - for the games in which he has played, I think he would average as the best.
I would also be interested to see if the Mark Harris average was above 3.

Can’t recall who I voted for 2 seasons ago (it was possibly Long, for his strong performances in a couple of positions all season, plus THAT tackle in the final), Murphy was exceptional in the final third of the season but very few fans on this forum would agree he was consistently good all season.

Any anti Sam Long stuff is just juvenile trolling. Sam Long has, for his entire extensive career here, become the first choice in his position in our starting eleven, despite being written of consistently as not X level, in the face of millions of pounds of player who were meant to supersede him because he wasn't good enough. He's been loyal, worked hard, given us some superb moments including some not insignificant goals and the tackle that I hope flashes before my eyes before I expire. Pack. It. In

My gripe isn't with Long himself as a player, he's a good squad member, fantastic attitude and I always respect a player who makes the most of his talent which he certainly has. It's more than I don't think he's held to the same standard as everyone else. The oft repeated phrase is that "he never lets us down", as if he's the only one. Off the top of my head the Norwich debacle, if that was, for example, Helik who in the first 20 minutes got beaten by a straight ball over the top from the other keeper for one goal and then had his man run off him for another he'd be called out for it.

I've seen Long get the runaround plenty of times but he doesn't get the same scrutiny as Ter Avest or Spencer would in the same situation and he's likely to stay in credit for a good performance for longer (see how often the good but fairly standard tackle he made against Bolton almost two years ago is mentioned). To a lesser extent the same applies to Brown. Both have top attitudes which buys them some leeway but it means mistakes get overlooked.
