Ex Player Paul Simpson has renal cell carcinoma (kidney cancer)

Get well soon Simmo, up there with the best wingers we've ever had. Absolutely carried this club for a while in the early 90s. Decent bloke off the pitch as well, always happy to sign an autograph in the Supporters' Club after a game.

Is there anyone medically qualified on here who can give a view on this i.e. survival rates etc.

Get well soon Simmo.

A quick text to a GP friend (so not specialist) suggests that it very much depends on stage. 1 (local to kidney) - whip out the kidney and off you go. Very treatable. Distant- like all cancers, hope for the best.

Get well soon to a fantastic player and by all accounts a really good man. In these Covid focussed times its easy to forget that cancer is still THE utter utter bastard.

As noted above depends on the Stage.

Really nice man, a mercurial genius of a player. Get well soon Simmo.

Horrible to hear this and I wish him all the best in his recovery. Tenacious as a player and I‘m sure that same tenacity will enable him to beat this.

I seem to remember Simmo visiting as an opposition manager. He had nothing but favourable comments to make about United. The fact that their are so many posts regarding his health issues shows the level of esteem with which he is regarded. Not enough of his sort, unfortunately.

Best wishes to him and his family. Never saw him play but that C word is KUT for anybody who suffers it. Lost both my parents to it.

I remember watching him and thinking he just can't be this consistently good. Brilliant player. Hope his treatment is successful. Best wishes.
