News of Paul 'Bez' Berry passing away ( aged 68), has been breaking on social media over the weekend. He was a local lad who went through the youth team, and then played in the first team in the 80s ( my sisters favourite player- she fancied him tbh), he made 108 first team appearances scoring 20 goals, including the first goal under Ian Greaves' tenure. He went from OUFC to Norwich City in the early 80s

He went on to play for Witney town, Abingdon Town & Bicester Town among other local clubs and, he managed Kidlington FC for a short time.

Tributes from Kidlington FC are on their FB social media site
as well as also Tributes on Oxfordshire sport memories FB page

Also, there is a tribute on non league matter social media site

Nothing, as yet , on OUFC OWS.

RIP Bez

As an aside, another long standing OUFC supporter (and ex-player) who was often heard on WATG on Radox, Robin, passed away recently. His wife, who suffers from dementia has lost her carer and partner. They both used to sit quite close to Mrs L and self and we often chatted before the game.

RIP Robin- I met him and chatted with him at the FF before last, nice chap.

RIP Paul.

Condolences to family and friends.

Remember watching him dominate opposition defences many times for Abingdon Town. A quality player.

Hopefully new care support for his wife goes well also.

Remember him well. Curled one in from about 20 yards in, I think, Ian Greaves' first game as manager - 1-0 at home to Charlton.

I stand to be corrected but I think he had a trial at Norwich before joining Oxford. I don't recall him leaving us to go to Norwich, I think he just drifted into non league after Greaves' brief tenure and then Jim Smith's rapid rebuild which saw the end of many of those late 70's, early 80's, players.

Decent player in his day though and that old style bustling sort of striker.

RIP.

I believe she has been admitted to a care home. Lovely lady, always had a smile and enjoyed a bit of banter (especially at Robin's expense!)
No, Rosanna is still at home with carers coming in 4 time a day. I visited her last Friday & she is holding up well, considering. Immediate neighbours are wonderful as well, popping in & walking Freddie the dog!

That's really good news, thanks. I will be sure to pass that on to the others who sat next/near to them both. Give her our best next time to you are visiting. (Becky & Greg)

Another Kidlington boy (Paul Berry, no idea about Robin). I was at school with his cousin (Paul's, not Robin's... Although maybe 🤔)

Remember him well, especially that goal.
RIP Paul.

Most people remember Paul Berry’s goal versus Charlton on Boxing Day 1980 but i remember him scoring a fine goal at the Manor
versus Barnsley when he was played clean through , sat the ‘keeper down before rolling the ball into the empty net at the LRE in September ‘79.

The Boxing Day victory really was the upturn in United's fortunes. When you consider the gate was around 5500 it just shows how low everything had sunk..........Then again, gates were very poor nationwide back then.
