Brannagan and Mills aside, the team we had out for the last twenty minutes is probably going to be close to the starting eleven and they comfortably controlled the game from that point.

So is Ramsay someone who wants us to play possession football ?
 
Interesting few preseason games. I love how we’re trying to play, mixing a passing game, moving through the 3d’s with going long when necessary. The players seem to be responding to Ramsey and we look hard working and organised. I think his biggest test is who to play. Some of the younger players are doing amazing!
 
On pre season form you can’t look past GOD starting but would take a brave manger to start him in a league game

I think he’ll be starting lots of league games. He seems to be developing the knack of being in the right place at the right time and he’ll get some goals in league one.
 
FWIW.

I see little has changed over the close season…

Referees (especially Gingers) at the Kashstad are still poor,
Injuries still go unpunished unless they are opposition ones
We still seem to lose interest after going a goal up
New signings get injured in PSFs.
Sparky misses open goals
Mills is quick
The traffic is still sh*te

The game?

75% of the time it was good entertainment. I was impressed with newbies Snowden (Worked really hard). and Elliot Wheeler. In fact ‘EW’ showed SDbele how to do it. Great potential.

First 15 min was Ok with some nice flowing football. 30 min followed which allowed the Creepies to show what first touch crisp passing can do to teams like ours. Then after the big changes were made we looked much much better.

I agree just think it would be a brave call from Ramsey to start someone with little experience in league 1.Over some who proved himself last time at the level

He’s a superb figure of a man - tall and strong but less muscle-bound than before.
 
What was Bradney like today? Would you play Bradney over someone like Vaulks?
 
Strange that Vaulks wasn't in the squad. Was that mentioned on the radio?

Bradney really only got going after 70 minutes, when most of the subs were made, but thought he was impressive from then on. Won the ball back a couple of times, looked comfortable in tight areas, played some sharp passes in behind their back line.

Looks like he's got a bit of talent.

Fun fact - Gatlin O'Donkor has made 78 (seventy-eight) League One appearances.

He's not quite the novice people seem to think he is.
 
On the whole, that was an encouraging evening's football. We appear to have a squad of players who are motivated and willing to adopt the style of football that Ramsay has trained them to play. There were still those moments, Cumming's distribution, some less than accurate passing and Harris still has it in himself to miss an easy finish.
However, plenty of evidence of a new style of football, more attacking, more entertaining. And some talented youngsters who look eager to stake their claim to playing.
We still have to face the real opposition, as in League 1 teams but, definitely encouraging.

How many minutes though? Although at 21 he should be much more ready than when he was a kid and we were throwing him on last 5 minutes of games.

GOD has played about 2,660 League One minutes in his career......almost exactly half with us, and half with Bristol Rovers.

Sparky has played about 3,400 League One minutes (promotion season was the only season he's played at that level).

Obviously in general terms, Harris is the vastly more experienced player......but there's really not much in it at League One level (though he also has a 15-6 edge in goals!)
 
Should also note that - whoever plays up front - the starting XI behind them is going to be genuinely good for League One. Assume something like:

Cumming
Spencer Helik Brown Currie
Cam McDonnell
Mills Tyler Emakhu
GOD/Harris

(and it becomes even better if you add BDK to the mix).

Think our problem this season is going to be depth (pretty much everywhere except full back and maybe central midfield, if BDK were to stay). If everyone stays relatively healthy, we'll be in the mix. If we get the injury bug then we better hope the yoof come good.......
 
Tony - if you think BDK is staying I have some swampland in Florida to sell to you.
 
A lot of managers would undoubtedly revert to starting Harris when it really matters - assuming GOD puts in a performance v Ipswich (and Harris doesn’t) then he will almost certainly have sealed a starting place in the cup game at Orient and a goal in either of these two would make it very difficult to leave him out for MK. It will give us an interesting insight into the bravery of Ramsey too - especially given his connection to Harris as a Welsh team mate.
 
Can’t see Harris or O Donkor playing 90 minutes in any games, so both are going to get plenty of minutes.

The real problem comes when one of them is injured and we have to use an out of position player in the rotation, at least with the goalie situation it’s a position where if JC stays fit/isn’t suspended he can play 90 minutes 46 times, if either O Donkor or Harris gets injured for a while you can’t expect the other to play the full 90 up top game after game, we are going to have to be a bit inventive at some point.
