One topic discussed at the FAB introductory meeting that took place on 30th Sept was that the club have often found it difficult to consistently have our current club crest replicated, especially when reducing the size of it onto things such as poppy badges or having it printed in vinyl for display around the ground and training ground. It was proposed by Adam Benson that the club would like to remove the pin stripes on the current club crest, leaving just a yellow background.

The general feeling amongst FAB representatives was that most fans would actually prefer it without the pin stripes, or wouldn't be bothered enough by it to have a strong opinion on it. But we wanted to confirm this feeling before giving the club the go ahead to make the change.

A wider communication should also go out from @OxVox on this topic.

@Emilio will have a better eye for these things than I do, but doesn't 'United' look too small on this now?

1 Current crest with lines demonstrating UNITED fitting within INNER part of the extremity of the X and R
2 Edit to show UNITED fitting within OUTER part of the extremity of the X and R
3 Current crest
4 A more balanced edit

It is a small edit, but as a designer, this is how most clients would prefer I balance their logo.

EDIT - This doesn't necessarily mean it is "right", just how people on the whole tend to prefer it. It balances the two words better (in terms of them both being of importance, otherwise UNITED can seem like a lesser detail), and it also reduces the gap between the base of the UNITED and the top of the Ox's head.

Thanks for this. To my eye the option 4 version just looks more visually pleasing. It is quite amazing how much difference just a small change can make.

Taking it further, do also think the crest is too snug within the shield in 4 (left) and by shrinking the ox and words slightly it feels more comfortable (right).

EDIT - I also moved the shrunken content slightly higher in the vertical alignment of the shield, as a general rule of thumb with these things (both design and art in general) is that things look a little bit weird vertically central, and you should always raise them slightly.

Love them both, but can see why the one on the right is an improvement.
I'm so pleased to see the removal of the stripes!

I mean I prefer the nostrils, but the inconsistency of the lines is pretty bad on this mockup. You'd want the lines to be completely consistent in their thickness.

I've just spent an hour doing it at work, and this is what I would do - a halfway house between the OG painting but using thicker lines like the current badge. I've also done a faithful thin line replica. Current badge on the left. My preference on the right. (I also think yellow lines around the outside is nicer)

EDIT: I've also never really been a fan of how the nostrils finish. The shortening of the horns makes sense too. I understand people wanting to be completely faithful to the original but smaller alterations than what we have right now makes more sense to me.

Graphically I think this is neater (Before and after):

I personally think the ox should still be modified to take us back towards the original, as per my above post

Seems an odd time to make this change. Wouldn't it be better during the close season?
Apparently it's for the sake of small digital graphics, merchandising, and letter-heading etc. That's a year-round issue, more than a new (hopefully Championship) campaign one. I doubt the replica kits sold between now and the end of the season will see this minor adjustment.

Noticed Sky already using this for their graphics for the Norwich game

Haven't got a link to it but the best version of our badge in my opinion is the one on our deckchair/paint splatter away kit from 93/94.

Think the ox design/font size is spot on 👍🏻

Agree get rid of pin stripes.

Looking at the old shirt above, it appears the Ox head has stretched horizontally over time, looks like a fatter face these days. Are the horns shallower also?
Defo the angle of the shot.

Have a look at the changes I made to show you a basic history type thing

The pressing question is... when will @Northstandboy and the other mods make this change to the forum banner?
Thank you for your message, we want to assure you that your request is important to us, the moderation team are currently not giving a s**t until 2nd Jan 2026, we appreciate your understanding in this matter.

I'd had a few back-n-forth emails with Adam Benson in the Autumn - suggesting the ox needed returning to its more original iteration.

However, the original horns don't work in the crest shape - so I propsed the above - using the original ox facial features, but with the current horn shape. (a hybrid)

And like @Emilio said - I also thought UNITED looked a bit small and lost without the stripes.

I even gave Adam Benson a hi-quality vector graphic ready to use. Shame.

There is definitely too much space between the different facial elements on the current design. I do actually prefer the slight inward slant at the base of the nose of the current version as opposed to the flat one from older renditions. Other than that, I'd take your design happily.

Me and you were on the same page 🙃
