On December 18th 2014, Oxford travelled to Manchester for an FA Youth Cup tie against City. The game was held at the new City training ground, the first competitive fixture played at the venue.

Nearly four years later I thought it would be interesting to see how those who featured in that game have fared since:

Oxford:

Jack Stevens (GK) – still at OUFC – no first team apps.
Freddie Grant (FB) – left OUFC in 2016, played one season for Ox City in Conf South, and has now joined Wealdstone in the same division.
Miles Welch Hayes (FB) – left OUFC in 2017, played one season for Bath (Conf S), and has now joined Macclesfield in LEAgue2.
Cian McCormack (CB) – left OUFC in 2017, currently with Wantage in Hellenic LEague
Robbie Cundy (CB) – 16/17 loans at Ox City (Conf S) and Southport (Conf Nat), 17-18 – joined Gloucester in Conf South, 18-19 – moved to Bath in same division
George Jeacock (MF) – released from OUFC in Dec16, joined Farnborough, moved to Thatcham in Hellenic League in Sep18
A J George – (MF) – left OUFC in May 2016, joined Mansfield U21s, appears to have left this summer
Muctaru Conte (MF) – now at Reading City in the Hellenic League
Lewis Hayden (MF) – currently with Didcot Town in Southern League.
Seth Humphries (FW) – currently with Didcot Town in Southern League
Jordan Graham (FW) – left OUFC in 2017, joined Mansfield U21s, promoted to first team squad this season, making debut on opening day.

Only Stevens (0 appearances Oxford), Welch-Hayes (5 Senior appearances (1 Oxford, 4 Macclesfield) and Graham (Mansfield 1 Senior appearance) are currently with League Clubs, with two others doing well at Step 2 teams (Grant, Cundy).

Man City:

Charlie Albinson (GK) - released in Summer 2018, joined Blackburn U23a – no senior apps
Tosin Adarabioyo – Still at MCFC – 18/19 loan to WBA – (13 Senior Apps – 8 for MCFC)
Angelino – loaned to Girona & Mallorca during 2016/17, season loan to NAC Breda for 17/18, left MCFC summer 2018 to join PSV Eindhoven for c£5m – (77 Senior Apps - 3 for MCFC)
Marcus Wood – released in Summer 2018, joined Bolton U23s – no senior apps
Javairo Dilrosun – Released in Summer 2018, signed for Hertha BSC – (2 Snr Apps – 0 MCFC)
Isaac Buckley – spent 2017/18 on loan at FC Twente and then OUFC. Released in Summer 2018, joined Peterborough – (21 Senior Apps – 0 MCFC)
Sam Tattum – Left MCFC in 2016, spent 18 months at Staleybridge Celtic before joining FC Utd in December 2017 – no senior apps
Cameron Humphreys – still at MCFC in U23s, played once in Checkatrade Trophy against OUFC – 2 Senior Apps – 2 MCFC)
Rodney Kongolo – loan at Doncaster during 2017/18 season, Left MCFC to join Heerenveen for £750k – (44 Snr Apps – 0 MCFC)
Aaron Nemane – Still at MCFC –loan at Rangers then Go Ahead Eagles during 2017/18 season, on loan to AFC Tubize for whole of 18/19 season (25 Snr Apps – 0 MCFC)
Bersant Celina – loan to FC Twente during 16/17 seaosn, Ipswich for 17/18 season. Left MCFC to join Swansea in Summer of 2018. (77 Senior Apps - 4 for MCFC)
Sub – Paolo Fernandes – Still at MCFC – two year loan to NAC Breda 17-19 – (29 Senior Apps – 0 MCFC)

Only 4 of the MCFC team remain at the club (although three of those are on season long loans elsewhere), with all but one of the others leaving this summer. Nine of the 12 have made first team appearances, but only four of those making the senior MCFC side. Furthermore, five of the twelve are playing abroad this season (six if you include Swansea).

So, in terms of the game next week, there is just one player from each club who played in that game four years ago, that could feature again next week – Oxford keeper Jack Stevens and MCFC midfielder Cameron Humphreys. However, as Stevens has yet to make a first team appearance for Oxford and Humphreys has only 2 FA cup games to his name in his senior career and has only featured for the U23s so far this season, the chances of one playing, let alone both, are very small.

So are the current crop of players better quality or do we have a manager who wants to play younger players.

Napa and Baptiste both came from Reading I think but played in the Youth Team (?). Long has played a few games for the first team now and Owen James has made one appearance. Lopez is highly regarded and has been on the bench and played in the Checkatrade (as has Spasov)

It appears that we are getting more players coming through and I guess that it is due to getting in a higher quality player?

Small point on Man City and Isaac Buckley-Ricketts is he wasn't released but sold for an undisclosed fee. Sorry to be a pedant.

Very interesting article though and shows the attrition rate for Youth players. Also shows the need for a manager to be willing to give the youngsters a chance.

Dilrosun is going to be some player, from what I've seen. Can't believe Citeh let him go for nothing.
