The good news for Britain is that by the time everyone gets to vote again, they'll be able to look across the Atlantic and see where abandoning comparative centrism gets you (I say comparative, because centrist in America would be moderately right wing in Britain).

Immigration into the US is and will continue to be down sharply. I am far less confident that living standards will be improved.....or even flat.


On the Lib Dems.....I feel like they used to have a bunch of smart, pragmatic, sensible folks leading them that used to actually make an effort to articulate and defend policy positions, from Owen & Steel all the way through to Clegg (yes, he was politically naive but he was an intelligent, principled individual). Now? Davey is a sub-Bojo clown and there doesn't seem to be anyone inspiring on the bench either. If they don't watch out, they are going to get steamrolled by Polanski and co.

The overwhelming majority of folk are "somewhere in the middle". They are neither Corbynistas or Nazis.

Its why the Big Two fight over the middle so much, then promptly shaft them (Labour) or slightly reward them (Conservative).

As it stands the Conservatives are tainted by their own "Exit/Collapse" and Labour are doing their best to beat that in 18 months rather than 14 years.

So with the big two imploding that leaves Reform, The Greens & the Lib Dems to try and grab the centre bloc vote.

Reform shovel up disaffected voters from the right and the middle.
The Greens grab the left leaning and some middle.
Lib Dems are left with some of the middle and the "anyone but the others" voters.

On a side note my physio is a local Green District Councillor and, round here, they do a very good job on the ground talking to and listening too people. At County level we`ve got Reform who are finding their feet somewhat and at Westminster we have a Conservative MP who also is very savvy and active in is constituency,

Seems we are pretty lucky to have a broad church who are actually trying to work together for the benefit of locals......... its almost like PR has landed by default.

Are the Lib Dem’s left leaning? I would say they are the ultimate modern middle class party, economically fairly conservative but socially liberal, the party that deputy heads vote for. They probably have existed for the last 30 years as a neither of the above for the big two, but, unexpectedly, don’t seem likely to capitalise now that the big two have finally fallen to pieces, as society has become polarised and they are not really suited to that.

Not just deputy heads, but heads as well. My wife - a retired head now - has voted Lib Dem for many years.

(She taught Carlton Morris back in the day.)

650 votes (less than 2% of those who turned up) for the Lib Dems in the Gorton and Denton by-election suggests that their performance in local council elections is not translating into votes when it really matters.

Perhaps the media is correctly allocating attention to those parties that actually win votes.

To be fair, they were only defending 3.8% of the vote, so not coming from a particularly strong place to start with.

What I found more interesting was 'Sir Oink-a-lot' from the Monster Raving Loony party outperformed the party that splintered off Reform, Advance UK.

So their vote has collapsed by more than 50%, which is quite a stinker of a result given the opportunity posed by a waning Labour party. I doubt they'll perform quite so badly in other seats.

I've never heard of Advance UK - perhaps it might be asking too much for another standalone thread for them!
 
Ed Davey has been a terrible leader for the Lib Dems. Frankly, a lot of the silly stunts and Instagram nonsense make my toes curl with embarrassment. That is what comes to mind when I think of the party, rather than anything he has said and any policies of theirs.

With the Conservatives disappearing up their own backsides and Labour pretending to be one nation Tories so they don't scare the horses, you would have thought that a slightly left of centre, liberal party with an already developed infrastructure would have been in prime position to offer an attractive alternative. Instead, they seem to have retreated into their shells.

I’d agree with that. At PMQs he comes across well, but always seems to focus on the same areas and I’m not so sure they hit the spot with many voters. It was ironic a while ago when he was questioning the government on the post office scandal whilst seeming to forget that he was implicated a long time ago.
 
Davey: A deeply unserious politician.

An embarrassment.
