 Online Abuse of players

Left Wing Cross

Level: Dave Roberts
(176 Apps, 8 Gls)
According to EFL, approx. 900 players received online abuse in the 2024-25 season with more than 5,000 incidents reported.

Plus reports of another 141 incidents of racist abuse at grounds.

If squads are around 25 per each of the 72 clubs, that would be around half of players affected.

I don't know how this compares year-on-year but it feels like in-ground abuse is in the news more recently, I wonder if it's just being monitored or reported more rigorously?

The online stuff, none of it's acceptable but social media is such an unmanageable torrent of crap I don't really know what you can do other than say get off it if you're in the public eye. Easy for an old one like me to say though, if youre under 30 it's probably like being told to go out with a bag over your head.

I wouldn't be surprised if, for some, there may be contractual requirements for them to have a social media presence. Whether it is the club, sponsors, agents, or whoever.

There are some dreadful posts on Facebook one the other day slagging off shimmy but after a few comments this post was taken down.

Its also important for this behaviour to be called out. We've seen a change on this forum where heated debate can result in personal attacks that are unnecessary. But it is nothing compared to the cesspits of Twitter and Facebook where the language used by some is genuinely staggering.

The sort of stuff that used to be post from faceless anonymous accounts, is now being done shamelessly from their own accounts without any thought for who else can see it. I'm not one for censorship as a whole, but I wonder how some people's partners, employers or parents would feel if they saw the language and hate that some of these spew out?
