Romeny has uploaded another Instagram video of him doing no look passes and stepovers vs lowly opposition for Indonesia. Does anyone else find it hard to warm to him? Or just me? 😂

I think it’s the fact he portrays himself as a prime Neymar when in fact he’s been very poor for us…. Hopefully next season he proves me wrong!

No, it's not just you.

It's all very incongruous and illusory.

You can be a professional footballer of merit AND a social media personality, but it only works if you're good at both. The alternative is an uncomfortable mismatch, style over substance.

The yardstick for his performance as a professional footballer is going to be in EFL League One, assuming he stays.

If he can't make it at that level, and i have severe doubts he will, then he'll have to find somewhere else, a place where he can either be a decent player, or appear to be one.

The fact that a few tens of thousands (being generous) of Oxford fans think you're a terrible combo of a bit rubbish and way too full of yourself probably doesn't register if three hundred million Indonesians are hero worshipping you (and I'm not saying he's there yet.....but six goals in ten appearances - including the two that got them to the World Cup Asian playoff round - for a football mad but success-starved country is surely getting him on the way)

Hopefully that is enough to get him a move to an Indonesian club, have a feeling the money will come in more useful than he will next season.

Fingers crossed - although who to is a challenge.

I once added them (in homage to Erick) to one of my saves in Football Manager, and half the teams have the same name.

Not joking, at the moment in the Indonesian SuperLeague, you have Persib, Persija, Persijap, Persik, Persita, Persebaya as well as PSIM, PSS and PSM. And Persis and PSBS just got relegated.

I'm sure to an Indonesian, it's obvious who's who......but I wouldn't want to be Ed trying to get my offers straight amongst that lot!

You’re spot on, he’s one of if not the most recognisable footballers in south east Asia at this point, his figures on social media are comparable to that of a Bukayo Saka

I know it's easy to decry the opposition, but 6 in 10 at international level shows there is something decent in there somewhere....
 
Perhaps it has a lot to do with confidence. There must be a big difference between playing when the fans support and applaud you, the manager always wants your name on the team sheet and you start every game compared with being on the fringe of the first team, getting occasional minutes and the fans being at best lukewarm.
That must apply to a lot of players.

Whether you think that you can or think that you can't you are probably right.

Confidence comes from competence, at that level he is competent, in the championship he wasn’t. Whether he would/will be in league we don’t know, personally think he will be off.

Nobody really shone this last season (bar a couple of bright spots like Mills and...er....). It was a shambles tactically, in terms of recruitment and the way the club was managed top to bottom. Nobody really came out of it well.

Romney has something, that's for sure....I'm just not entirely sure what that something is. Hopefully a full settled, sensible preseason and a manager with a clear idea of how to use him to his strengths will bear fruit.*

*not saying this will happen, but clearly what needs to happen .
 
I think no pre-season for Romeny ruined his chances before he could even get going. Coming in January for a team scrapping at the bottom was always going to be tough to get consistent game time which he didn’t.

Fast forward to his injury and then having again to get into a team scrapping at the bottom is always going to be tough.

I am of the belief he never got a fair shot. Did he ever start 2 games back to back? I understand he didn’t really take his opportunity when getting subbed on here and there but who in our team did?

Well, there’s a slight pattern with that unfortunately where we’ve bought players and given them little/no consistent opportunities. By the time we’re forced or could do with a change, they’re so under utilised that they play with rust, low confidence and become known as a risk to play.

That’s when you end up with old guard players out of position (like Cam in the 10) perceived as safer choices or debates on forums around whether they were good signings or not. They’ll never be a good signing if managers aren’t brave enough to involve them and we’re just flushing millions down the toilet with no chance of resale.

Depends on the opposition though. A few years ago, I went to a WC qualifier in Hong Kong, when they played Vietnam. It was very poor- probably Conference North/South level. As pretty much everyone has said, Romeny is technically pretty good, but his complete lack of pace, apparent unwillingness to fight for the ball, and the fact that he loses nearly every 50:50, means he's unlikely to make an impact, even in L1. Shame, because there's a half decent player there.
 
Anyone else think Romeny could make a big imos t if given a chance this season? There is a player there, maybe a run of games is needed… I’ve not given up on him yet!! (Probably sell him now and make me look silly - ha)
