Current Player Thread Nik Prelec

I really like BdK but this 'he is the best in 40 years etc' is way over the top.

Assuming we are limiting it to central midfielders, we've had Ray Houghton, Trevor Hebberd, Les Phillips, Robbie Mustoe in the team. After or contemporary to Jimmy Magilton, we've had the likes of Bobby Ford, John Lundstram, Joe Rothwell and I'd include the likes of Dave 'Smudger' Smith and Martin Gray as they were a key part of keeping us up (different skillset but nonetheless vital).

As I say, I really like him but I wouldn't be making such claims.
I think he's on a par with Lundstram, but a different type of player. We never saw the best of Rothwell. He's a far better player than Smith, Bobby Ford or Gray imo. Agree he's nowhere near Hebberd, Houghton etc. We've also never seen BdK in a dominant team- I suspect if we were challenging at the top of L1, he'd be the standout player in that division.

For me, prime John Lundstram was better than BDK, but there was so much space to be utilised in league two compared to the championship so it’s hard to make a fair comparison.

BDK is talented, however he has gone missing in a few games and had a few poor performances, though some of that can be forgiven when you’re being played to death in a Rowett team, where he made it fairly clear he wasn’t at his happiest.

BDK is good but the best in the last 40 years?! This place does have some very very strange statements thrown out there sometimes. BDK is good but there is even a current player that plays along side him who I think is better and that is Brannagan. That's before you even mention Joey, Lundstrum, Rothwell.

Rothwell wasn’t anything special for us, so I’m not sure he should be mentioned in this conversation.

His career did take off afterward though.

Excellent. I was just thinking we needed another non scoring striker, glad we got that sorted. 26 goals in 127 appearances.

We are masters at collecting them to be fair.

League 1 is already quaking!

I guess his hold up play is decent to be fair.

It was always going to be a big ask signing a real centre forward that scores goals when £2.8 million has been spent this season on covering loan arrangements for surplus to requirements players .

Add into the mix the £1.2 million we spent on covering Stuart Findlays loan costs while scoring in Scotland over 3 years .

My conclusion is we really are a wasteful club and there needs to be more accountability for 🔥 £ .

The Nic Prelec signing is probably a base line to where we actually are heading at present. A useful addition for a mid table battle in league 1 .

It was the “seems a bonkers decision to me” that I was reacting to. I don’t think we can form such a solid opinion based on the circumstances so far.
Not to keep going round in circles but activating the buy clause for a player who you’ve just said we can’t form a solid opinion on is the bonkers part, there was absolutely no need to do it

You’re saying because he’s been injured and hasn’t been fit even when he was playing we don’t know if he’s any good but then it’s a sensible decision to spend one of the biggest fees in our history on this player?

Not for me

What was the fee?

I guess it depends on the way you view things. And I said you can’t form a solid negative opinion. I think the only solid opinion you can form is based around a safe assumption that he will be more effective post-injury; in my opinion he has offered us promise so far (I agree, one goal is not a brilliant return) and his offering will improve further, which will hopefully bring goals.
Even if it doesn’t bring shed loads, he has shown he is arguably better on the ball than Lankshear, and perhaps better in the air too, meaning he would be a promising second striker.

I must of watched a different BDK to a lot of people. For a huge outlay & club record signing I expected a lot more. Be interested what sides show an interest this summer for him & what kind of fee is spoke about.
Huge outlay *for Us* is not the same as a huge outlay for a Championship starting midfielder.

That you're aware of

Makes you wonder whether we had an obligation to buy him at the end of the season, but the club used some clever wording to say we took an option to buy him now.

The only way it makes sense is if we had to buy him anyway, so have lessened the loan players in squad issue in the meantime.

The reporting at the time suggested that this was absolutely the case - but the obligation kicked in if we stayed up.

Would certainly be confident for our financial folks to assume that this was going to happen!

I thought he looked very good when coming off the bench last night, held the ball up well, added more pace up front, and he even managed to get a shot at goal (excellent turn and pace to get into the box before his shot was blocked).

FWIW I've always liked the look of Prelec. Strong, deceptively quick and he hold/link up play is good. Goes without saying that he needs to score more but, give his injury and that he's played so few games in his preferred position, I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.
I like Prelec. He doesn't panic on the ball, is calm and makes more sensible progress carrying the ball than any of our other 'strikers' He will be good in Lg1 bu I think will benefit from another body playing closer to him

Having thought on this over night.
I think we activated it now as the club think we will be L1 and maybe the clause only comes in as a champ club.
We want him for his assets and value so did it now.
It also solves the loan players in a squad rule but I think it maybe more the first here.

The time when he won a foul after holding up the ball for 10 seconds or so was really impressive strength - their CB was an absolute ogre, but he held him off expertly and forced him into the foul.

As soon as he's fit enough to go at least 60, I want to see Prelec starting every week in the #9.

I think there might really be a player there; plus he's ours, so would be good to get an extended look to determine if we think he can be the guy next year, or if we have to recruit them in the summer.

I can see Nic Prelec being an asset if what we expect happens

Hopefully Donelly could be useful
