General Next Season's Squad (26/27)

In terms of the market value of the playing squad, the financial health of the club could depend on promotion, with the possibly of keeping hold of some of our rising stars.

We came up with only one young player really (Tyler), who had any chance of attracting a big fee.

In the first season, we had one of the oldest squads in the league, and the two U23 players we signed permanently in the first window (El Miz and Sibley) didn't really cut it.

A second season in the Championship has given us some great prospects in that age bracket (Spencer, McDonnell, Currie, Mills, Goodrham, Emakhu), whose value could go up, and this has put the club on a much surer footing.

Hopefully a handful of them will give us a year, helping them to improve (along with the club's books).

Yes put it in those terms, I reckon the past couple of windows has been good in strengthening our 'assets' and young players
I would think that this will hopefully continue( together with academy players coming through).
With the Trophy cup and being in L1, maybe the development of some younger players could be a little easier ( hopefully prepare them for us going up at some stage)

If only Des was not so convinced that Championship experience would be enough

The question is I suppose is do we go with the Strikers we have or do we delve into the transfer market for one .

I reckon we’ll look at a loan signing to help supplement Harris and Prelec, just like Lankshear and Scarlett have for the past couple of seasons. I wonder if there’s anyone else good from Spurs we can take?

Suggestion on York forum that they've watched Golding a fair bit during his loan at Southend.

Gatts is a funny one as is Goodwin but in different ways.
Gatts hasn’t progressed much if at all , Goodwin injury prone or at least has been, so maybe a good loan striker would the answer however where do the above two stand at the club ?

Richard Lison?

Regarding Prelec, there was talk of him.being unsettled in England?
I wonder if he could be sold ( unless the rumours were wrong, or he has changed his mind?)

I reckon that both will be loaned/ sold to L2 clubs.
I would be amazed if either were in the squad

Unfortunately no one ever wants to buy players we don’t want so it will be a loan at best until their contracts run out.
Been a strange season for O Donkor, he had spent a season and a half before this on loan, yet spent this season playing for our youngsters occasionally, seems a bit of a wasted year for him unless he had been injured.

Wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if he were sold.

That whole permanent signing is odd imo. Wouldn’t surprise me if there was a buyer lined up when we purchased in Jan. As mad as that sounds.

Negru did pretty well for us when needed in League 1. Perhaps he still has a future here.
Could Marcelino Ferdinan be our League 1 ace?

I think they'll be more outgoing then incoming.

If we let Prelec go (for something like what we paid), I think both we and he would be missing a trick.

Putting aside his last sub appearance, he can hold the ball up well. He's won more in the air on average than Lankshear. He gives you someone in the box who could compete for crosses much better than Harris.

Unfortunately he's not had many chances to show what he can do in his preferred position, and, when he has, he's been outnumbered by quality defenders with little support. He's also not been in the best physical condition. Hopefully that will not be the case next season.

From his point of view, this is a chance to make a mark, which he's only done before in a couple of stints playing for Tirol. Turning 25 in the summer, a successful season in a strong side would be exactly the boost his career needs.

Personally I see him him doing a Kyle Wootton and bagging 20. Sell him then if we need to.

I’d far rather Golding was given a chance than Negru, who’s shown himself to be a bit of a plonker despite a lot more chances in the EFL.

Haven’t seen Golding for a good while but stood out at times even when Robinson played him on the wing 😂

Would like to see him given a bit more of pre season. Since Goodrham it’s been bleak on the homegrown front and we burnt out the best chance we had of the next one in O’Donkor.

Got to do better and this season is a good opportunity.

How has Negru been a plonker?

I don’t know if he has a contract beyond this season - he signed in 2023, but we have some rebuilding to do at CB assuming makosso and Davies move on.

Think he’s had a few off field things hasn’t he? A few shared on here. Probably no worse than a lot of players but got caught.

Liked him as a player so it’s a shame. I think we need a rejuvenation of the back line anyway, it’s feels to me that it’s a bit stale and I don’t think we have a true leader/organiser. Feel like we lost our desire to defend our box this season, too many shoulder shrugs and wafting of arms when it was too late.

Didn't we have a pretty good defensive record despite having 30% possession and being relegated?
I reckon it is further forward we need to change things

I seriously hope that we aren't going to rely on Harris, Prelec, Goodwin and GoD as the strike force.

That is basically relying of Harris recapturing his form two years ago. That year was by a very long way his best ever season (19 goals) - previously and since, his best was 6 goals (last season with us).

Apart from that, Prelec's best ever was 8 goals (in Austria), Goodwin has scored 4 goals in his 34 loan games at a lower level and GoD has scored a grand total of 12 goals in his 96 game career, again some of those at a lower level. Now the last two are young players and may suddenly blossom. But to be brutally honest, I have seen very little from O'Donkor that suggests he will do so, we saw (literally) a couple of decent touches from Goodwin and Prelec has not stood out at all this season.

My major concern with the defence is distribution. Neither Helik nor Brown are decent pases of the ball, Spencer and Long are average, HTA is good but injured or rarely selected, and Cummings kicking is woeful which means we are reliant on Currie or a midfield dropping deep to keep possession, which makes it harder to build attacks and why we have generally gone long despite the fact that the only player we have that is well suited to win and recycle play from long balls is Prelec who through injury and Lanks amazing form, barely got a look in as a striker. We need to find new ways of playing in league 1 and need a defender who can carry the ball or pick an incisive pass, like Ben Nelson gave us. I really liked the look of Makosso but we may have burnt bridges there

What is the point of harking back to what players did with us 3/4 seasons ago - they are water under the bridge as far as I'm concerned. Players on loans finish by June anyhow so rather than those "moving on" it will be a case of trying to make any permanent. There are certainly conversations to be had about returning ones-no clamour on here for Sibley or Kioso to return to squad as I see it.

In Sibley’s case you could argue there’s a place in the squad for him if he’s under contract - midfield we already have Brannagan, McDonnell and Vaulks, so are we going to spend time and money bringing in a new face when we already have a decent option as backup?

I doubt there's too much animosity somehow.

And in terms of the way we're going to want to play next season, I'd say Makosso would be a better fit than Helik.

Also, contractually, Helik has to be getting paid a lot more, he's probably only on the books until next summer (when he'll be turning 32), and you'd imagine he'll be one of the ones with a release clause built in. Is anyone going to be surprised if we lose him (for a minimal fee) to a team in Poland?

A lot could depend on how Luton do today.

It's easy to forget (because he's a beast), but if he did sign, Makosso would be the youngest player in our squad going into the summer.

I think he's got the potential to be a real superstar.

Quite possibly. But then why has he not been playing?

We seem to have a plethora of signings (Makosso, McDonnell, Jin Woo, Emakhu, Prelec) who everyone seems very confident will be top players in League One - but who couldn't get any game time, let alone contribute, in The Championship.

The gap is substantial, but not to the degree where top League One players (Brannagan, Cumming, Brown, Currie, Donley) look out of their depth.

Schroedinger's footballers, apparently. Up there with the best in their respective positions in League One - yet not even good enough to oust Will Vaulks, Michael Helik or Miles Peart Harris from a side that limped it's way to relegation.
