General Next Season's Squad (26/27)

Shame we wouldn’t want to try everything we can and consider keeping BDK, Mills, Helik, Currie etc and even tempting Lankshear for a shot of glory in L1. Get rid of the dead wood and we’d have a hell of a core team for that level.
Pisses me off that Brum and Wrecksome could spunk as much money as they liked in L1 with no consequences; feels like they used a cheat-code.

No way will Lankshear play in L1. If Spurs are relegated he could be in their squad.
Finances ( and players wanting to play in the Championship, plus even some contracts), will means that a few will leave however we would love to keep them

  • The Share: A single ordinary share was allotted on January 16, 2026, for a total sum of £47,833,737.23, which was fully paid.
  • and they do things like this at Wrecktum

No doubt there is going to be a lot of churn in the squad again this summer. Some players will want to stay in the championship if they can, some players will no doubt also be encouraged to seek pastures new.

The disappointment of the last few days will start to fade as the summer days start to warm up and we’ll start to get excited about transfer rumours again, before looking forward to the fixtures coming out so we can look to see when we are playing the likes of Reading, Leicester and Luton (if they don’t make it)

As the summer transfer window thread is still a few weeks away I’ll jump the gun with a name of a player I hope is on our radar. Especially if the worst happens and we lose Stan.

Jaze Kabia of Grimsby. Plays as either a striker or winger and, having scored a hat trick against Swindon on Saturday, would be an instant favourite here. I think players who have been successful in league 1 and the top of league 2 is the sort of profile we should be looking at for this season. Punts on players from abroad has probably become a thing of the past now we have left the championship.

I’m not sure if he would be in budget, and if Grimsby get promoted through the play offs it might be even more difficult, but we should see ourselves as one of the bigger hitters in league 1 and player sales should net us a decent kitty.

The new PSR will be tighter as such and different in Lg 1 which is restrictive for us as the wage budget is determined by turnover. But as much as you can have a plan B we'll have to see and am sure it has been plotted already.

Owners can still put in significant additional equity investment but only 60% can be used towards wages. Likewise only 60% of transfer fees, additional prize money and cup earnings can be used for wages.

Won't the financial 'restrictions' in League One be mitigated by our need to invest heavily in the stadium?

In other words, if Erick does want to plough additional funds into the player budget, he'd have that option, as long as he put commensurate funds into the Triangle.

From what I've seen about the new rules in League One (SCMP):
  1. Only 60% of turnover can be spent on player wages, and I think we currently spend over 100% of (potentially a much higher) turnover on that, so in theory this would mean cutting wages by (what?) roughly 75%.
  2. Only 60% of funds raised through transfer fees can be spent on player expenditure (including transfer fees, wages and agents' fees), so in theory if we raised £10m in transfer fees this summer, only £6m of that could be put back into the playing squad.
  3. Finally, only 60% of cash injections from owners can be used on player-related expenses, so an owner can't just spend limitless amounts on the first team without putting corresponding funds into a club's infrastructure. Crucially though, this equity investment does count towards turnover.
Doesn't this mean that, if the owner were to invest say £16m in the stadium, he could then chose to invest up to £24m in the playing squad?

I don't know if the owner is that ambitious or wealthy, or if I'm missing something, but with the amounts needed to go into the new stadium, it would seem to leave the option to 'do a Birmingham' or whatever.

Yes, in that respect the rules in League One are still much more lax than those in the Championship.

But errrr.......do we really think we're going to be able to persuade Erick to fork out tens of millions more on our playing squad at the same time he's trying to raise a hundred mill for the new stadium?

His family's probably wealthy enough, but I'm not certain that he's crazy enough. Maybe once the stadium is finally under construction......

I can’t remember Churn has he been out injured.

There has been a shotgun approach to recruiting rather than a sniper's rifle. We ended up with a huge, unmanageable expensive squad. Far too many players out on subsided loans, far too many players in the squad but not selected by either GR or MB.
I know it's hindsight but two or three players of Championship quality would have been cheaper and more effective than eight or nine players who two managers didn't rate.

I think it's been pointed out before that the recruitment team does not choose from a readymade list of easy to acquire Championship quality players, each with 100 per cent probability of positive impact.
They choose in a highly competitive market from 2 limited pools of players:
1 those with the potential to step up, from academies and lower leagues
2 those who can be financially incentivised to apply their proven championship skills to a team that is every bookies favourite to be relegated.
We have limited funds to bring in players from pool 2.
Pool 1 is always a huge punt.
Our rate of success has been patchy, and I do not find that particularly surprising.

Not massively surprising maybe, but many have been failures ( look at all if hhd players out on loan or not didn't in.the playing squad).
Just a couple more working out would almost certainty gave meant us staying up.

Lets not forget that we can only name 7 substitutes in Lge 1.
Potentially we'll have fewer senior players, as there is no need for 7 senior players not being in the matchday squad.
Might be an opportunity for the Under 21 players.

Totally with you on that one. To take it a step further let’s not have an expensive loan player or high earning seasoned pro blocking the path of a player we can develop for ourselves.

League One squad rules after different to The Championship

22 registered players permitted not including goalkeepers or U21s.

20 out I reckon.

Can we keep Currie, Spencer, Mills?
Don’t think you will be far out there. A lot of dead wood, yep that term again, needs clearing out.

I dare say that if you add up the wages spent on injured players who could not contribute fully (Phillips, BDK, Bradshaw, Romeny, Prelec, Tyler, Currie etc

PLUS

Loaned out players where we picked up part of the tab (you really want a list?)

PLUS

Those who became persona non grata like Dembele.

Add all those wages up we needed to spend in an attempt to stay in the Championship and they will add up to more than the entire wage bill from our last season in L1.

It’s a truly horrible situation to be in. And that last wage bill in L1 is what we are going to need to return to or somewhere near it. There is no way of sugar coating this but we will struggle because of what we need to do.

If we want Championship football on a regular basis we need to time our arrival with a new ground in tow. Immediate promotion with a costly squad could find us turning into another Rotherham.
