National News Next Prime Minister

Don't go along with that. In more recent years lots of people vote for personalities rather than parties. Blair was a big personality and the Tories had nobody to match him. Brown was dull in comparison and Cameron just shaded him. Labour won't win a GE because of Corbyn. If they had a big likeable personality as leader they would be doing much better in the polls. I can tell you for sure a large portion of the electorate vote for the 'person' they would like as Prime Minister and not manifesto's.
If brexit and reality tv is anything to go by, everything starts to go wrong when the general public is invited to vote for it.

Just my humble opinion of course..

I think it is a very fair point, personality counts for a lot. Thatcher and Blair had it in abundance.
May, Corbyn and Corbyn don’t. Sturgeon and Farage have it.
For Labour to have a chance they need to have someone who can appeal to the public. Now I’m stuck, as I can’t think of anyone. David Milliband for a comeback maybe, but if course he’s not even got a seat in Parliament,
Conservatives have Johnson, like him or loathe him I think the public will vote in big numbers for him

Exactly. To put it in a simplistic way, if Farage left the Brexit party and went back to UKIP he would take thousands with him. The Brexit party would slowly fade away as have UKIP. Farage is the Brexit party. If he were to join the Tories, well it doesn't bear thinking about!!?
Also, Milliband is centre right of Labour and as things stand in that party he wouldn't even get selected.

Agree. It's as much personality than it is policy. Marcon got across so well, Salvini gets across well, May doesn't, Clegg did, etc. Johnson has many failings, but he is an engaging personality for those of a political persuasion. Some Tory candidates are lovely and intelligent people, but they are as bland as John Major. It's not time for another John Major. They need someone who frankly, will get under the skin of the left as much as being a policy nerd.

if Gove gets Tory party leadership and brexit happens , will Gove's first trade deal be with Columbia ? :sneaky:

Always worth asking in these situations, ‘Who would Labour most fear’?

To answer my own question, probably Johnson and Gove, or from the outsiders Javid, and all for different reasons.

Johnson because of his ability to somehow appeal to people from various backgrounds, and Brexit Party supporters.
Gove rightly or wrongly has a reputation for detail, and would make mincemeat of Corbyn at PM questions.
Javid, simply put his background ‘story’.

Can’t see Hunt, Hancock, Raab, Stewart etc putting the fear of god into Labour.

>Pete Burrett - re your post#41 - I wasn't going for the scoop of the year award! ...I was "talking" to Mr.PC but I was just a bit puzzled why a poster with that name would bridle ;) at being called by his posting name. As it goes I had never heard of that footballer so it was revelation of sorts..well to me anyway..but then I am not an "established poster" here.. as you put it.

PC is a senior poster whose views quite often elicit interesting, thoughtful and largely respectful responses. He tends not to suffer fools gladly and deals with them 'economically'. He will enter into quite heated debate at times, but never punches below his weight, so you should ok.

PQ is posting links to a self confessed national socialist sympathiser.

I don’t think taking cocaine is something to be ashamed about it’s badass for a politician to do cocaine fair play to him

It seems he has spoken to the Sunday Times today, so clearly gone against the advice!

It's going to go wrong then unless they had control of the questions and therefore friendly*. ;)

*I haven't seen it so can't say. ?

Yeah I know but we’ve all done it a few times

I've not. He's admitted to it. Prosecute the ugly git

Whatever anyone’s views are on recreational drugs it has crossed my mind that all these tories are revealing their shady pasts to make themselves appear more ‘street’ and move away from the conservative elitist reputation. One of them was outed so they’re all coming out, just in case. Down with kids with a rock n roll past as it were.

I’m so cynical about politicians now I wouldn’t put anything passed what they, and their spin doctors, would try.

Speak for yourself!!
Bojo did , by ' admitting' his dalliance with Columbian marching powder in his younger days, when he was chairing 'Have I got news for you' some 14 years ago.... setting an early trend for fellow tories perhaps?

They seem such a motley crew, and to think one of them will shortly take the reins.
