His family said it was "in shock to have lost this amazing father, partner, brother, uncle and son" after the academic was found dead in London on Friday.

People have a picture of academia as a dreamy cushy gig, discussing angels on pinheads, letching at undergrads, chess in the afternoon, but it’s a remarkably stressful high pressure job for most. In research you have to be thinking of things that no one has ever thought of before and your performance is available online for anyone to see 24/7. Not many jobs have that (sportspeople, musicians, actors, politicians). The pressure to bring in grant money (which is ridiculously competitive), generate profitable IP, change public policy and opinion, and be an excellent teacher of the next generations all builds up and people make missteps under pressure that they struggle to recover from.
I can’t say I’m surprised that this story has ended this way, and that observation is a tragedy on its own. But not as tragic as the poor bloke and his family have encountered.

It's news... tragic, but news nonetheless. I first read about this very sad accident on the BBC sports news page.

Just as wars, murders, mass killings, natural disasters and suicides to name but a few are all tragic, they all make the news.

No one has made any derogatory comments... so not sure why it is crass.

Are we not allowed to comment on any of these things?

I’ll give this thread a viewing for now but my worry is it will descend into another politically driven one where contributors just fall out over policies announced/the main characters in each party/immigration and in an unpleasant way.

So the mods have taken down a post about the sad death of a pro cyclist which i don’t think there was any opinion or debate to be had.

And replaced it with the sad death of the Cambridge professor. Which was I think triggered by exactly the type of pile on reactions once the story came out.

Maybe stick to general news and current affairs rather than specific stories about individuals particularly when they aren’t in the public interest.

Talk about drought or national emergency warnings , anything banal.

Someone has deleted the post about the cyclist which was the opening post in this thread when I first read it. There was a reply from a poster. As well as myself so I can’t have imagined it as I replied.

Now there is a different thread with the bbc link but no replies.

And the opening post here doesn’t show any “edits”.

You Imagined that it was the first post here. It was a later news post but then appears to have been given it's own thread. It's nothing sinister.

My condolences to the family. Last year someone whose family I know slightly died in a motorbike race crash and was a similar age. Completely horrendous and the family are still understandably in pieces

Sad for his family, but ultimately this story is just a lesson in why you shouldn't build your entire life on fantasy, deception and fraud.

Ohio State University, the University of Glasgow, and Birkbeck (Uni of London) have confirmed he did not hold posts / qualifications he claimed to hold.

Palgrave Macmillan confirmed he didn't publish a book with them, even though he claimed he did.

He claims to have been an almost world-record breaking runner - claims which cannot be proven or disproven, but a claim that he ran nine marathons with a broken fibula are "fanciful" to say the least. Same with his claims about being a youth player at Crystal Palace - not corroborated by anyone, and his actual documented playing career was at a very low level.

Did he raise £5m for charity before he became a public figure?? Who knows - he never proved it, it was never corroborated, and he dodged questions about it. Could be true of course, but given his track record of proven lies I seriously doubt it.

The pelters were deserved. He stole a position of power from someone who actually deserved it. Bloke was a total charlatan.

He claimed at a 2024 speaking engagement that he raised over £5 million for charity from his marathons and that he had raised over £5.5 million in his life. Arday has said elsewhere that the money went ‘most notably’ to Shooting Star Children’s Hospices and Shelter.

He claimed that he had published a book called ‘Being Young, Black and Male: Challenging the Dominant Discourse’ with Palgrave Macmillan. Palgrave Macmillan say that they took a proposal from Arday from this book but did not publish it.

Chuck in a bit of alleged plagiarism and anyone who points out the wild claims and inaccuracies is, of course, "racist".

And the media are downplaying the event as a "plagiarism row".

No, it was more than that. It was a man who invented a whole list of accomplishments to enrich himself and steal an opportunity from someone else. The reason why it must have felt "relentless" for him is because there were so many of his false claims cropping up, and he had no more excuses.

It is very sad that he thought his only way out was suicide - after all this story would have been forgotten by next week - but ultimately this situation was all of his own doing.

Crazy also that another serial liar, Jameela Jamil, is one of the people calling for an inquiry. She has her own history of compulsive lying (various lies about swarms of bees, broken bones, and piano playing!).
