Chelsea have taken part in more penalty shoot-outs than any other league club. Their Carabao Cup win over Southampton in midweek came via their 31st shoot-out, three more than Oxford United have contested. Chelsea also needed penalties to beat Aston Villa in the previous round and to defeat Villarreal in the Uefa Super Cup in August. They have met this weekend’s opponents Newcastle once in a shoot-out, advancing in an FA Cup third-round replay in January 1996.
Most penalty shoot-outs contested as a league club
Chelsea 31 (won 15)
Oxford 28 (17)
Brentford 27 (16)
Walsall 27 (10)
Scunthorpe United 25 (12)
Rochdale 25 (14)
Bradford City 24 (13)
Blackpool 24 (10)

Would anyone like to have a go at naming all of the matches?
I was going to start with OUFC-Exeter BSP play-off, but we weren't a league club then.

Charlton away in the League Cup comes straight to mind, and we've had quite a few in the EFL Cup under it's different guises, especially since they started having random shoot-outs after draws (including losing two away to "those lot").

There is a list HERE which doesn't seem to tally up with the 28 stated.

Remember Pornstar Pal Lundin and Arjen Van Heusden both saving and scoring in a shootout to win League Cup (?) games in the 90s.
Lost to Swindon of course in the ChupaChups Trophy.
Then there was that mad 14-13 against Chelsea U21s that finished after midnight our time as I recall.

I wonder where the Times got their numbers from then?

Get @SteMerritt to rework the numbers and all clubs will be below the average. 😉

The list I found doesn't seem complete, I'm sure we had a shoot-out before 2003, so I'd go with The Times on this. Pretty sure we lost at Swindon back in the 90s, midweek game with our last penalty flying over the Stretton End and into the field behind. Plus I also remember something like described by Berliner at The Manor.

Pretty certain Arjan Van Heusden was against Tranmere (possibly '97?)

I had a look at the RageOnline season details, and that calls the result of a game with a penalty shoot-out the full time score.
Could involve a bit of detective work to get the full list. Or accessing whatever match database the Times is using.

That was Trevor Ayllott in the ZDS

Didn`t we set/break a shoot-out record against Chelsea?

I've found a couple that don't seem to be on the list above:

29/09/2004 LDV Exeter City (A) lost 1-3 on pens after 2-2 draw;
18/10/2005 LDV Brentford (A) won 4-3 on pens after 1-1 draw;

I'll try and search some more if I can find the time to do so.

Its not that he missed the goal but very nearly missed the entire Stratton Bank.

I would imagine that the number of penalty shootouts that clubs are playing will have increased a lot in recent years with the rule changes to the FA and League Cups. We had five shootouts in 2019-20!
