I think we dont realise how much we have missed him
It sounds crazy doesn’t it, but I totally agree.

Maybe not in the same way as a mainstay like Cam where we’ve got history to tell us how much we miss him, but a player the profile of Phillips is what we’ve been crying out for on this recent run. Vaulks hasn’t been the sense of calm and dash of quality I thought he would be, so I’m hopeful it will be Phillips that pulls the rest of the players with him and just settles us down at a time we’ve threatened to look a little out of our depth.

We’ve missed him being comfortably our best target man for long kicks/passes forward too, glad he’s back but I’d be in no rush to start him

We've been here before this season with Placheta and Vaulks. Scarlett had a bit as well before he scored. Now the heat is on Phillips.

I'm not in a rush to write him off, especially as Rowett seems to like him and he knows his way around the league.
So you think he’s a good player - worth a place in our starting eleven?

Feels like you're trying to put words in my mouth there.

I think it's likely that he's better than what we have seen of him so far. Nobody questions Vaulks' inclusion in the starting 11 now, but a few months ago they would have.

A footballer turning round some indifferent form is a story as old as time, and this is a guy who played in the Premier League 140 times, so he's clearly got pedigree. What's more is that Rowett has managed us for just 8 games but has given him minutes in all of them, which would indicate he rates him, and I think Rowett knows a player.

I think the WhoScored ratings sum it up.

Awful since returning (apparently a 7.3 down at Plymouth though!).

He's only got one assist all season.... which is the knock down for Sparky against Blackburn. Given the type of goal that was, I would really struggle to give anything to Phillips there.

So what we're looking at is a player who since returning has put in a continuous run of stinkers, hasn't contributed to any goals, and has ultimately cost us a hell of a lot during those games through stupid tackles in bad areas, or giving the ball away.

OBVIOUSLY I want him to come good, absolutely no benefit in wanting our own player to play bad, but lets be realistic here, he's been in horrific form.

So what that he's played in the prem 140 times? When you're past it your past it. He's too slow and ineffective for this level. We should accept he's was a bad buy, get rid and free up a space in the squad and moved on.

I agree but Rowett seems determined and that's that.
Hope he comes good.

Still think Phillips will have a big part to play during the run in, particularly against more difficult opposition. In our most challenging game under Rowett (Preston away) he did a very good job of protecting Kioso (something which Placheta doesn't do).

There's no doubting he's struggled for form since returning from injury, but most of our squad have suffered dips throughout the course of the season so far.

Staying up this season will be dependent on the entire squad playing their part, and I think players with experience at this level will be important even if they aren't starting week in week out.

I'd really like to defend him, but last night it wasn't so much a lack of quality (that might turn around as per Vaulks, Placheta) but the game just seemed to pass him by completely. Wherever the action was, he wasn't. If we're relying on our press then we need a 10 that can get stuck in.

I wonder how things would have looked if he and Dembele had been switched around - Dembele had some time wide on the wings, but seems to find himself heading toward the penalty D most of the time anyway.

WhoScored ratings also gave Dembele a 6.36 and Placheta a 6.63 against Blackburn though, and they also have McEachran as our 12th best player this season. With Helik, Brown, Moore, Nelson, Long, Kioso and Leigh all featuring in our best 11 (ratings wise) this season, I would surmise their algorithm is probably ranking defensive contributions (interceptions, tackles etc) over things like successful dribbles.

Of course that's not saying Phillips is doing particularly well, it's just those stat websites all need to be taken with a pinch of salt.

I think the value in having Dembele out on the left is exactly that - he gets the ball and drifts in and commits people. It's how he created the chance for Harris against Blackburn and then drew the foul before Brannagan's free kick. There were also a few opportunities he created last night from cutting in off the flank.

I actually thought we could've been better in switching Harris and Phillips last night. Both were pretty ineffective, especially first half, but we were struggling to get out and Phillips is a better target than Harris if we need to go direct. Either way I agree that if we're looking to press then the 10 is pretty key in that, and when Rodrigues is on it he orchestrates the press really well from that position.

@SteMerritt are you collecting the averages from our new player ratings? Do you have the ratings over the last dozen of games for him from folks on here to hand?

I don’t think it’s too impolite to say we were virtually carrying two players last night - Phillips and Harris. I’m failing to see what either brought to the team. Harris can’t hold the ball up, I guess the reason he’s in the team is to bring others into the game, it can’t be for his goals. Phillips just lopes around in midfield not really contributing much at all. We won and Rowett obviously knows what he’s doing but to the naked eye - as a fan - it’s not easy to see their contribution.

I haven't as of yet, but will do when I get time. I need to make updates to my database before I can capture the new format.

Damn you for changing it...

Agree, stats don’t paint the whole picture.

However, when you also fail the eye test (which he fails spectacularly), I think it’s clear he’s not up to it.
