Helps the opponents when whatever they do to him, they can't foul Sparky. Rightly he gets fouls given against him (some utterly stupid by him) but the same is very often ignored the other way.
So why do other 'strikers' get these fouls, Bradshaw for one? Could it perhaps be that Harris doesn't have the strength or the nous to get free kicks?

His shirt was being pulled half off by their defender last night with the Ref close by literally watching it. That was absolutely nothing to do with nous or strength.

So why do other strikers get these free kicks? I don't know why but Harris just doesn't win them. Believe me, I want him to do really well but he offers so little.

Please no, if we were in league one then fair enough but he really is not good enough
As much as you have to love Sparky’s personality I hope this doesn’t mean we’re already admitting defeat on bringing in an upgrade.

With Harris, Bradshaw, Romeny, O’Donkor and Goodwin all under contract and with very little prospect of being able to offload any of them (not saying we should with Romeny although I think a league 1 loan would do him good) there’s not really any wiggle room anyway I guess

I like Harris - look for example at the Sunderland game - he played well against a decent team. I think people fixate on his lack of goals, but he brings others into play. I'd be happy for him to stay.
He’s got a hell of a work rate but his lack of goals is worrying, he gets chances but doesn’t put them away. Yesterday’s commentators said he’s scored one goal this year, that’s not good enough, it’s may.

Depends who else we are bringing in to play alongside him/Harris playing off him.
With respect he’s on his own up front and it hasn’t worked with the three behind we need a decent Billy Hamilton style player for Harris to bounce of and deliver the goods.

I fully expect us to sign a big number 9 this summer. Rowett has generally always had a big striker for others to play off.

Who needs strikers to score some goals eh?

I like Harris and he did well in League One, but he really does need to improve his game to stay at this level. I'm not expecting 15 goals a season, but his return really should have, and needs to be a few goals better off.

Maybe Rowett thinks that with better service, there will be a better output, I'm not as convinced.

Personally, I think it makes sense to keep Harris. He's obviously got his limitations at this level, but he's also a workhorse who's not had a lot of good service this year and has played another huge amount of minutes, which has definitely had an impact on his confidence.

Now that we've survived it's unlikely that we're going to be able to upgrade the whole squad over the summer with a play-off push in mind. We need to recruit sensibly to upgrade the priority areas, but also ensure that there's enough depth in the squad. Harris would probably be viewed much more favourably his season if we'd had alternative options to play differently depending on the opposition and rotate him out more.

I also think Rowett's comments have been telling - our lack of athleticism and ability to press for long periods has meant Harris has often been chasing by himself, and we've not really won the ball in high areas very much. His harrying and pressing are a big part of his game and he's not been able to be as effective at that this season, and he's ended up increasingly isolated as a result.

He's one that I think could look a lot better if Rowett can add that athleticism he talks about, particularly in central areas, and is still worthy of a squad place next year if Rowett thinks we can play a better press more consistently.

I'd definitely keep Sparky, worth his weight in gold l, but like others we need to keep him fresh to get the best out of him. We can't keep flogging players, so need to upgrade squad to enable rotations.

He really is not good enough. Well said.

Look. Very genuinely if we’d had a decent striker this season then we might have been pushing for a top 8 place. League table since Rowett took charge has us in that bracket (in spite of the fact that we have carried a striker who scored just 1 goal in that time, (and never won us a penalty the whole season (!))

This isn’t hindsight. Last year’s stats flattered him as did the 4 in 4 in August. He is cowardly when challenging for the ball, hides during the build up phase (so we can’t even put a direct ball over the top) and been thoroughly pocketed by centre backs across this division.

The fact that he’s been matched for scoring by Greg Leigh tells its own story.

Mark - thank you for service, especially 23/24, but you ain’t good enough to lead the line. If you want to hang around and play the Jamie Mackie last 10min clown role (step on keepers toes, get a yellow card and cup your ear to the away fans) then you can stay put and fight it out with Bradshaw. But that’s all you’re getting from me.

I think we all accept sparky has had a disappointing season in terms of goals and assists.

However to suggest he isn’t good enough also isn’t fair , I don’t have the stats to hand but I would imagine we have scored more goals with him on the pitch than without him.

We don’t play to the strengths of a goal scorer in the way we set up do we ?
How many has Bradshaw scored since he arrived in Jan a proven striker at our level.

I agree we need another option and would love to see Hardie arrive but that’s not because sparky isn’t good enough !

If we’re using that as our metric then Matt Ingram is our most valuable player; we’ve scored 3 per game with him on the field.

Don’t be a chump.

I’m happy for Harris can be the back-up next season (coming on with fresh legs at 70-80 mins) but if he’s our starting #9 again then don’t be surprised if he out scored by the entire back four.

Suggesting he isn’t good enough in the Championship is nothing to do with fairness - he quite simply is not good enough at this level. Why do you think Cardiff, in the Championship, got rid of him ? I’m really not sure what you’ve been watching if you think he is good enough.

He wasn't good enough for League One.

If we have Harris in our squad or even playing from the bench come August, something will have gone seriously wrong with recruitment.

Which obviously don’t count or mean less for some reason?

This argument collapses when you hear Gary Rowett, in the Championship, offered him a new deal.

Those 4 goals are like penalties, if you don’t like the player who scored them it’s fine to discard them.

That great long distance volley against Blackburn? How many times does he score that? That one can definitely go. The goal he just about bundled in later on in the season? Didn’t put it away cleanly so get that one gone as well.

You can make a decent case for him to be on zero goals, that’s before you start looking at his misses which probably puts him on minus 4/5 for the season.

I've not known a player to be such a divisive issue amongst fans since Jack Midson ( should never have let him go) or even Rob Duffy before that. My own opinion on Harris is that he should be a squad player, not our regular number 9. He isn't good enough.
