McGuane under Manning is a Championship level midfielder.

Under Des, he was a average L1 midfielder.

Different managers get different performances out of different players.

Move on.

I actually think he suits a specific formation.

In Des’ 4-1-2-3, the deep lying midfielder needs to collect the ball and move it on quickly, pass it forwards if possible. That suits McEachran more than McGuane, as he is a better, quicker short passer.

In our current 3-4-2-1, there are two deep lying midfielders, which gives much more scope for one of them to be a dribbler like McGuane.

I think he would have prospered in this current system, but sadly we’ll never know.

I noticed City have been playing 3 at the back too. He showed his best form for us, for a relatively short period of time, given how long he was with us. Let's see how consistent he is for them, rather than over a few games. I wish him well though, appeared as nothing but a good professional for us.
 
I think some others have touched upon it above, the problem with McGuane was never his ability, when he was in good form he had more technical ability that most of the squad. But he struggled to maintain it consistently throughout his whole time with us. It seemed like a mental thing rather than ability.

I also don’t think he fits into Des’ preferred style. The last 2 games, where we’ve played 2 sitting midfielders, he’d have been a useful option. But Des’ didn’t trust him playing that deeper role alone, which I tend to agree with based on what I saw.
 
We will seasonally lose players many of us like. Some incoming players won't improve us but most will as we have a good manager and recruitment team and amazing backers.
We need to avoid players with high risk of injury though, that's false economy.

Its not looking the best deal at the moment, lets hope something comes of Sibley. With Hanson and now Sibley the Derby academy isn't looking the best waters to fish in, Ebiowe was there as well.

If you actually look at Derby their style of football is kick the ball 50 feet in the air and shove over the opposition, their idea of a good footballer might not be the same as ours.

McGuane under Manning last season no one can debate was our best player, but once Des came in, he didnt look the same. I thought it was pretty inevitable that he would go in the summer, and we got a pretty decent fee for him considering he hardly played in the back end of last year.

I think that's a good move for him. He can shine in league one but he's just a squad player in champ.

He was a strange player here. I always felt like he was playing "with the reins on" if that makes any sense. It always felt like he had more ability than he showed.

Maybe it was because of tactics. He had spells of a few games where he looked really good and others where he was ineffective or just always taking the easy pass.

I could never quite work him out. Not sure what others thought

I agree wholeheartedly other than I don't necessarily think it was tactics, I think it was him.

Dude seemed to live for possession of the football, and would rather commit harakiri than give it away cheaply. So he was always turning back with the ball, always playing the simple pass, always drawing the foul rather than trying for the killer ball or driving into the area. It's why he had three goals and less than ten assists for us in over 150 games!

If he had ever taken the handbrake off, then he might've really been a player......he certainly had the pedigree.

But if neither Karl Robinson nor Des Buckingham can get you to do that......it's probably never going to happen.

I don't think it was coincidence that his best spell for the club coincided with the most risk-averse and robotic manager of his time here, Liam Manning.

A strange player, undoubted talent but never really seemed to turn promising performances in to dominant, man of the match type performances. I think L1 is his level and he's joined the right club, they will romp it next season. I have a feeling Grant will become a top manager - he's been around the coaching scene and always seems charismatic and personable. We were linked to him prior to appointing Des and I heard he was very keen on the job here. One to watch.

When Manning based our game around him, letting him pick the ball up from the back four and then dictate play, he was often my man of the match. But when used as 'just another midfielder', for want of a better description, you often didn't know he was on the pitch!

Huddersfield will 'romp it'?
Luton, Cardiff and Plymouth ( and Bolton) may have something to say about that.
They should be up there, but not sure that they are the Birmingham of 2025/26?

No, the fade definitely started after Manning Left (7th November according to the OWS). If we take the number of votes he received on here in the match threads Aug-Oct...
