Thats nothing. there was one away game the season before last i think (or maybe the one before) where the opposition ifollow commentator called him about 3 different names all in the first 20 minutes... my fave being Marus Magwarnay.

The year before, he played 3,474 minutes, and had two (0G, 2A)

Six direct goal involvements in two seasons is......errrr.....not a lot. That's the same number as Elliott Moore, and less than Sam Long, Ciaron Brown or Greg Leigh!

If he was a genuinely top class defensive midfielder (in the Makele vein) then this wouldn't have mattered, but that wasn't him - he was at best serviceable defensively.

He has skills, he has quality but he doesn't do enough with it - and I think that's mostly due to how his brain works, and his almost pathological desire not to lose possession.

Maybe Manning will get the best out of him again........but it's the right call for us. Bonus if we've got some money for him.

That's because your sentence was made up of a conditional clause, with the "which he wasn't all the time" within parentheses.

It implies that for any defensive midfielder, that goal return was poor (and thus MM's figures were particularly poor specifically because he was often played in more advanced positions too). So I provided you with a world-class defensive midfielder whose goal return was worse.

But if that's not how you meant it, no matter.

Just to add my thoughts... I genuinely thought Marcus could be Premier League quality. I don't have the analytical skills that others on this board possess, but on an aesthetic level, on his day, MM was one of the players I've most enjoyed watching over the last few years. I'm glad he had some degree of redemption after his 'wilderness' period last season, and got to shine briefly in the play-off final, and ultimately I'm a little sad that it hasn't worked out for him here. That said, if Des doesn't see it, then it's best for all that he's moving on. And I wish him luck, just (as we say) not against us.

Not much different to the record of Mickey Lewis to be fair, his was 7 goals in 350ish games, so about the same scoring ratio (although MM wasn't as defensive as Mad Dog)

But Mad Dog was a real terrier in the midfield who led by example with 100% commitment and winning the midfield battle, allowing the Jim Magilitons , Chris Allen's and Joeys to do their thing . Also played a season at cb despite being 5'8" !

I swear he played his entire first season at the club without ever leaving the centre-circle... Just flattening anyone who dared enter his realm.

He was a link up player a bit like Luka Modric (obviously inferior), Liverpool fans used to use stats against Modric during his time at spurs in arguments about him as a top midfielder compared to Gerrard but I don’t think anyone would argue against Modric as the superior the player now.

Goal/assist stats don’t favour players who can keep the ball, cover ground, have good positional discipline etc, but more to the game than that, even if ultimately goals win you games.

Yeah, he was a good link up player for getting the ball from centre back to full back or the other centre back.

He played a massive part in our start to last season, which got us into the play offs, so he deserves a bit of respect for that for me.

He’s starting every game for them now, and I think that’s coincided with an upturn in form.

It’s a shame we didn’t keep him as he’d be perfect as one of the two deeper central midfielders in this new formation. I think he’d be better than both Vaulks and McEachran as well.

But that's why we happily sold him, he wasn't better than McEachran after Des came in. I don't think there was ever a question about his potential, and it being unlocked in a Liam Manning side, but for the majority of his time here he looked no more than a solid League One player

Totally agree. He's a player who suits a specific manager
