Ex-Player Thread Marcus Browne

Indeed. Although I said similar about Cam once as he went into the crowd and was giving his shirt away, which really felt like a goodbye.

I think we’ll part ways but would wish Browne nothing but the best.

His career has been ravaged by injuries and I hope he gets back to tearing up opposition defenders again on a regular basis.
He’ll get a good gig I’m sure

Just not happened iam sure we will sign Edwards and let's hope he stays fit ,Murphy and Edwards left side sorted ,fingers crossed.

Sorry to see Marcus Browne leaving.
He has had his share of injury issues but my goodness, he really was a great great player when he was on it.
He seemed to have the beating of defenders with barely a drop of the shoulder and he could net. Truly gifted.
Good luck Marcus and thank you for your massive contribution to our success.

One of those players who we wouldn't have gotten a sniff of a permanent transfer if he had no injury issues. He'd probably have gone back to West Ham after the first loan and be pushing for first team action there.

Yes you hope he really gets his fitness sorted and has 2/3 great seasons ,wish him all the best .Hope we don't have the same problem with Edwards but a good friend who supports Ipswich said he was a great lad abit inconsistent but that's wingers for you .

To this day Browne’s performance at Sunderland the first year they were down in League One and we went to the Stadium Of Light (1-1 draw - I think it was Holmes with a free kick for us?) is one of the best winger displays I can remember seeing for Oxford.

He absolutely destroyed them that day. Beating men for fun, drawing repeated industrial strength hacks because they just couldn’t get near him. Just a joy to watch.

I agree if it weren’t for his fitness issues (which aren’t a new thing or something we only dealt with during his most recent spell - even years ago during his first loan spell from West Ham we were limiting his training, monitoring his minutes and having to carefully manage him) he wouldn’t have been anywhere near playing for Oxford. It’s such a shame when he finally did get a crack at the Championship (and did ok with Boro initially) his body let him down.

When KR signed him back permanently it was a HORRIBLE deal in the sense that we needed a striker to make an impact right away, not a project for the season after. And to make things worse rather than managing him, like a kid in a sweet shop KR instantly got him injured again by keeping him on miles too long against Pompey at Fratton Park when those of us who were there could see he was absolutely shot and needed to go off way before he went down. But not one person objected to the deal in the sense that we knew if we could get him fit he’d be a quality addition. Ironically in KR’s disastrous last year he was fit for long periods and was easily one of our best players. It just went unnoticed because we were in such a sorry state around him.

I feel desperately sorry for him because he is such a talented footballer and comes across like a funny, nice guy who always wants to give his best. But he just keeps getting let down by his body and it has to be said that during his most recent comeback under Des he has looked a shadow of his former self. I truly hope that’s just a symptom of missing so long with injury and being chucked into high octane, high pressure promotion games with no match fitness. Fingers crossed that he gets a good club, then with a full pre-season under him he comes back next year ready to tear it up. He deserves to catch a break.

Clearly a very talented player, with frightening powerful speed, but for me his end product was always very poor, always seemed to make the wrong decision.

Decision making and end product can obviously be coached though, but unfortunately he has never been fit enough for long enough periods of time to make the necessary improvements to that side of his game.

Shame. Could’ve played to a much higher level than he is now seemingly consigned to.

Good luck Marcus, hope you get to start playing regularly somewhere, and can start enjoying your football again.

Just not against us though!

Hopefully his injury issues settle down so that he can go on to have a good career
Marcus was a very exciting player when he joined and his pace made him at times unplayable. Injuries have changed that though - he is lightening still over 5-10m but thats not enough in the Championship. Hopefully he will find a good L1 club to finish his career. Thanks Marcus for some special memories. Hoping Kyle Edwards comes back as good a version as when he got injured. At least as good as a fit Marcus from what he has shown

He’s got an outrageously good agent (or will be playing for almost zero wages) to get a Championship deal surely

But I think League One is definitely possible, maybe even the more likely destination. The lad is so talented and when he has got fit and played a run of games (ie in KR’s last full season) he’s still been very good at that level. If he prices himself sensibly with his wage demands I’m certain there will be L1 managers willing to look past his catalogue of fitness issues and the fact he looked some way off the pace in his last few appearances with us to take a punt on a player who on his day is one of the best in that division.

Expected him to rock up at Wycombe or Orient, so if he manages to somehow get a Championship move I'd be stunned

Think you're being very generous here (and misremembering too)...

KR's last full season was 21/22. Browne made 2 starts.

If you're referring to the poor 22/23 season - that adjective could be used for Browne as much as the wider campaign. He had the odd moment of course, but typically flattered to deceive (despite starting the majority of games).

I'm sorry to say he looked pretty off the pace last season too (those late cameos at the end of the season were woeful and significantly weakened us on multiple occasions).

In fact, I don't think Marcus Browne can say he's had a good half season (let alone full season), since his loan with us at the back end of 2019/20. Four years ago.

I think many are guilty of living off memories when it comes to Browne. Being brutally honest, I wouldn't touch him at L1 level, and probably not even at L2 unless his wages reflected those of a squad player.

In fact, as sad as it is may be, I think his days in the Football League are already numbered at just 26 years old. Wouldn't be suprised to see his career continue a similar trajectory to Rob Hall - maybe one more gig in the FL before a bit of joy in The Conference and eventually fizzing out of pro football barely into his 30s.

I take no joy in saying any of this whatsoever, of course.

Yeah I was referring to 22/23 you’re right! And I think he was one of our better performers that season. If more were playing at his level we’d have been far higher up the league.

I don’t disagree with your over-arching point that his next move is critical and he could find himself sliding out of the pro game if he can’t get fit and the right club to back him.

Ability to play higher but a stinking attitude. Can’t recall which game it was (maybe Leyton Orient H the season we went up?) but he put in the most half hearted, stroppy performance then is straight on instagram saying “stick with us, we’re giving 100%”.

Glad we’re rid of his type.
