Ex-Player Thread Marcus Browne

There's a club option

https://www.Oxfordm**l.co.uk/sport/19887351.marcus-browne-joins-oxford-united-middlesbrough/
Only one option there, sadly. Time we moved on from being a charity and put the club first. I love watching him at full tilt but can count on one hand the amount of times we’ve seen it since he came back. Unless the club can pinpoint where they’re going wrong with him, he needs to play at a lower pace somewhere or at a club that would be happy with 10-20 games from him a season. It’s not us.

Most of what’s said on the Murphy thread is transferable here.

Browne played 36 league games last season, so he isn’t a complete crock. I think they will trigger another season.

He's made 57 appearances in all competitions over the past four seasons.
Brown, Cam, Ruben & Sparky will likely all end up in the low 50s in appearances this season alone.

And we're almost certainly paying him a bundle (which we would have to continue doing so if we triggered the option).

I can see an argument for voiding the option but offering him a new 'pay as you play' deal for next year, because he does have skills (even if the end product isn't always there). But the same is true of Murphy and Edwards as well, and we can't (well shouldn't) do that for all three of them. One high ceiling-high risk winger is enough - we need to pick.

Murphy is easily the best of those three when fit and playing, and is playing regularly at the moment. If he can keep fit until the end of the season he'd be the one I'd keep (on a lower salary than at present).

Don’t want this with Murphy & Browne. Have we not learnt our lesson

Would say it’s between him and Edwards would keep both Edward’s was class before getting injured

Think we should release Browne but I just know he'll go to another club, have an injury free season and get 15+ G/A's.

But the two seasons after that he will barely play.

Definite FOMO kicking in now, a month ago everyone was happy to see the back of Edwards, Browne, Murphy, at the current rate of people changing their minds we will be advocating for Sam Baldock to get a 3 year contract by the end of the season.

Why? He's worth his wage when he's fit! 🤭

Or he’s now choosing to be available.
Murphy was available to Liam Manning who played him at the end of last season but rarely in 2023/24

I've no idea whether he was available or not to Karl Robinson since I don't believe a single word he said about players and their availability. We do know that (especially in his latter years) that Robinson had an extraordinary ability to bear a grudge

I think it would be nice if the aspiration was to build a squad where we have 2 players for each position.

If we're assuming there are 2 wingers and 1 striker on the pitch then the starting point should be 4 wingers and 2 strikers that you expect to be available for the entire season. So that would be Dale and Goodrham for out wide so far, plus 2 more to come in. Then you could throw a Murphy or Edwards on top of that.

Or, we fill one of the wide spots with Harris, but then you definitely need 1 more striker to go with Goodwin.

Basically I want to see at least 6 robust players for the front 3 positions before we start counting on any of Edwards, Murphy or Browne.

A great player on his day and one that gets you off your seat but unfortunately just too injury prone and we need to move on from Browne now.
He gets you off your seat so that he can sit down.

I feel for him as it must be devastating to have a career you've worked so hard for taken away because of injuries, but ultimately he's exactly the sort of player we need to be avoiding in future.

Passing mention on The Dub that Browne’s latest attempt at a return from injury isn’t miles away.

Ordinarily I’d be saying ‘let’s not rush it’. But the thing is we have single digit games left and we need someone else on the bench with a bit of mobility and ability to run with the ball (since for whatever reason Burey isn’t fancied) - even if he can only go for 15-20 minutes as a sub later in games (Josh Murphy’s role at the start of the season). And if he comes back and gets injured again making 15-minute cameos then that really does silence any dilemma around offering him a new deal at the end of the season.

I really do enjoy watching him play when he’s fit though. Even if it’s just for 10-15 minutes for a handful more games I hope we see him contribute…

This looks like goodbye. Sorry to see him go. On his day outstanding but sadly those days didn't come often enough or last long enough. Let's hope that the new fitness team means it doesn't happen to others. All the best for the future Marcus, and delighted that you got redemption after that other play-off final.

Sorry, how is this him saying goodbye? I mean he might go, I think it's the right time but this doesn't tell us he is going.

True. I'm making assumptions. - but I don't think any of the other non-playing substitutes have been given a slot on social media

New keeper ?, what future has McGinty got if any. Will he be released from his contract to go back to Ireland where apparently he has been doing well

He walked along the fans behind the goal on his own waving after the game - it very much looked like a goodbye type gesture.
Indeed. Although I said similar about Cam once as he went into the crowd and was giving his shirt away, which really felt like a goodbye.

I think we’ll part ways but would wish Browne nothing but the best.

His career has been ravaged by injuries and I hope he gets back to tearing up opposition defenders again on a regular basis.
