Current Player Thread Louie Sibley

Louis Sibley is like a few of our summer signings in that, they could be a decent player at this level. But he never really got a run of games, and it was difficult to see where he plays best.

He's got over 250 games under his belt at the age of 23, so there's something in him. But if you look at his positioning profile you can see why it's maybe hard for him to really settle in to a side.

I wouldn’t be against him coming back in the summer and trying to force himself back into contention but suspect that he'll likely end up elsewhere.

Had he not gone on loan he probably would have played at left back considering he has played there. Doesn’t seem a championship midfielder to me so maybe that’s his future, although maybe not for us if we stay up and Currie comes back.

It’s only a forecast , but this guy has us relegated on 48 points and goal difference.

He's a L1 scuffler imo. He never really looks in control - hence the ridiculous challenges. If we go down, he'll stay as a squad player. If we stay up, Rowett will try and offload him
Yes I tend to agree, I’ve not been impressed with what I’ve seen. Though I keep coming back to the idea that his goal at Pompey will keep us up.

He has played 162 minutes for us (less than 2 games), started just once and subbed on 10 games. I am not sure we have seen enough of him to truly right him off just yet. As Eggy said, he has played 67 games in the championship for Derby and he is still only 23 so there is a player in there.
I think this pre season it will be up to players like Sibley to prove themselves and if they aren’t good enough then they will be moved on. Same goes for players such as GOD, Dale, Goodwin.

He's only started 1 of Rotherham's last 5 games (though he has come off the bench in all the others).

If he's nothing more than a squad player for what has turned out to be a bang average midtable League One team, it would take an unbelievable turnaround for him to be making an impact for us (hopefully in the Championship) next season.

I could understand the logic of his signing - given his age and comparative experience at this level - but it's turned out to be a mistake. Just doesn't look like someone with a Championship skillset - the general untidiness and imprecision of his play screams lower leagues.

Bit of a mix and match between appearances and minutes here though. Yes he didn't feature much for us but in the 67 games he'd played before across three seasons he only averaged 43 odd minutes so he's never been a regular across his time at this level, he's was used as a sub more than he's started and was left on the bench or out of the squad completely more often than he played at all. He had a great start at Derby when he looked like he could be the real deal but his last couple of seasons at this level with them yielded two goals and an assist from the better part of 60 games (stats from Transfermarkt, could be a little off but I doubt it's masses). 23 isn't past it but it's old enough that you pretty much know what you're going to get, you don't tend to get drastic improvements and he was never first choice here and now has slipped out of the reckoning for a middling League One side.

I didn't mind the idea of the signing but bar the Pompey away game where he was very good he's been disappointing in the little time he's been on the pitch, I'm not sure what part of his game is meant to be his strength as he looks bang average at most things as well as a bit of a headcase. If he stays and finds the player he threatened to be when he first game through then fantastic but it's a hell of a stretch to think he's going to suddenly be good enough to take us to the next level, a move down to League One is more likely.

I agree with a lot of what you say but I have to disagree with the bit about the age thing. These days, because of the academy set up we have in this country players aren’t reaching their peak until 26-27 because they just aren’t exposed enough to first team football until much later. Brannagan is an example where he joined us at 23 and I’d say it took him a few years until we saw him really come into his own.
20 years ago players showed their potential a lot quicker. Dean Whitehead was signed by Sunderland at 22 and was in their first team starting games in the Premier League at 23.
Ben Nelson is a bright prospect at 21 and yet he has only played 38 games in the football league, 25 of those were in League 2.

I have three Derby ST holder work colleagues. Sibley was really highly rated at 18-19, with several PL clubs sniffing around. Which is why he was put on quite a long contract- but he never really kicked on. A really highly rated younger player can fall off the pace- best examples were those two appalling Man City loanees from a few years ago. Can't be bothered to remember their names, but they both spent a lot of time trotting around and looking bored. Sibley isn't like that - he's obviously really trying to impact a game but he doesn't look up to the Championship. Good athlete but lack of technique will let him down. Can see him having a decent L1/L2 career.

I know what you're saying, but not sure I completely agree. It's true that non first team players stay at PL clubs far longer than they used to (because of the money), but most of the ex PL players we have had as permanent players have been in their early 20's. They all made an immediate impact, and you could tell they were going to play at a higher level- Brannagan, Lundstram, Rothwell, Ledson. I'm sure there have been others.

You are correct with the ex premier league players but those players came through the academy’s of Liverpool, Everton and Man United. Sibley was in Derby’s academy. Look at GOD now, came through our academy and is cutting his teeth in league 1 and still the majority feel he won’t be ready for our first team next season.
We have signed Sibley on a ‘long term’ contract which shows he is a work in progress. The loan at Rotherham hasn’t worked out how either party would have liked but then you look at Scarlett. He wasn’t getting game time with us but has gone back to Spurs and been part of their first team squad and Europe league squad.
It’s a big pre season for Sibley and he either gets up to the level Rowett requires or he goes back out on loan or sold.

Anyone know how long his contract with us is for? I have looked around several places but a bit like transfer fees it’s all inconclusive. We signed him on a “long term” deal which would suggest to me more than 2 years. So is it 2 years with option of a third or is it just 2 years? For all we know there are relegation clauses in there somewhere too.

Anyway good luck to him, especially if he can push on there and we can get a fee for him at a later date. It’s clear he is not in the plans so move him on and get him concentrating on playing for his future.

Agents have access to all this sort of stuff on players and there are bits and pieces on the internet but it would be nice if the fans were kept in the picture about costs. I know some don’t want to know and some really want details to the nth degree. Some will say it’s none of our business but as we pay the wages through supporting the club it would be nice to know how that SLT is really performing too.
