We must be getting fairly close to record...Port Vale went about 70 games with out getting one,we're on 56 last season and so far this season...can't remember the last we got in league one ....anyone know?......lut? Out !

64 and counting.

Play off final.
46 league games and 3 cup games last season.
12 league games and 2 cup games so far this season.

It's been so long, I can't remember all of the ones we could have got.
The pull back on Dembele against Derby could have been given, especially if he had made more of it.

Pretty sure I remember Shemmy cutting in from the right and getting pulled down in the box as well. Millwall at home last season? Can't remember the game now.

I'd chuck in Helik getting rugby tackled twice in the same game (can't remember the specific game though) going for headers.

I really wouldn't be surprised to see an opposition outfield player pull off a spectacular save a keeper would be proud of, with nobody near him, and it not be given.

540 days.

That is how long it has been since Oxford United last won a penalty.

Most U's fans will remember that day (May 8, 2024). Cameron Brannagan's penalty drew his side level against Peterborough United to see the Yellows through to the League One play-off final.

Since then, Oxford's penalty front has been non-existent, with more than one full season, more than 60 matches, and one manager sacking passing since a spot kick was last awarded.

Gone are the days of the U's skipper bagging a record four penalties in one game in a 7-2 victory over Gillingham more than three years ago.

"We haven’t had a penalty now for about 18 months and it’s quite bizarre really," manager Gary Rowett told the press after Saturday's win over Sheffield Wednesday.

Teams going through dry spells penalty-wise is not uncommon. Just a couple of years ago Bristol City endured the same misfortune across a similar time period.

So, is it controllable? Is there a league-wide conspiracy since the U's were promoted to the second tier? Is it just bad luck?

First, let us look at some of the most glaring penalty dismissals, last weekend against the Owls providing a couple.

Nik Prelec had one, hitting the deck after bringing the ball down from a long pass into the box.

This was waved away.

The second, more glaring, appeal came when Filip Krastev pickpocketed Dominic Iorfa and attempted to round the goalkeeper only to be barged aside, the defender failing to get any of the ball.

"There’s a blatant penalty, possibly a second one, not quite sure how that’s not given," Rowett exclaimed on Saturday afternoon.

Other notable shouts include the opening day of this season at home to Portsmouth, Stanley Mills seemingly impeded but not given.

Last season saw other questionable decisions carried out.

A 3-2 win over Luton Town saw Przemyslaw Placheta hit the deck after being sandwiched in-between two defenders as he entered the box.

Another obvious call was a handball claim against West Bromwich Albion, dubbed "blatant" by U's fans online.

Without denying that decisions should have been given, especially the one or two at Hillsborough, Oxford can be doing more to find those opportunities.

Rowett's men need to get into the penalty area more

United are rock bottom of the league table in 'passes into the penalty area' (55) and second from bottom in 'crosses into the penalty area' (14) this season.

Even last season, the Yellows were second bottom for 'touches in the penalty area' (674), only relegated Plymouth Argyle below them and 128 touches less than third-from-bottom Preston North End.

Excuse stating the obvious, but to win penalties, you must be in the penalty area.

This is a general chance creation dilemma for the 51-year-old U's boss to combat and the penalty issue is natural by-product of this.

Of course, luck also plays a part.

Derby County, who also rank low on the two 'into the penalty area' statistics (although not as low as Oxford), have already been awarded two spot kicks this campaign.

But that is just part of the game.

Saying all this, it will not be a surprise when the U's are rewarded a questionable penalty against Millwall on Saturday.

When Bristol City went 65 games without a penalty a few years ago, even the New York Times wrote an article about it:

Their researchers couldn't find a longer drought that Port Vale's in 2021/22 (which went 73 games). They then got two in the same game (missed the first, obv). We would pass that at Charlton just before Christmas, I think.

(and the fact that Shemmy didn't get one against Luton last season was utterly ridiculous - the ref was in perfect position, looking straight at it, and somehow didn't give it. When you consider some of the spot kicks that have been given against us in the same timeframe e.g. Bristol City away, Coventry home last year, it's even more absurd)

Fair point made in the article actually - you can't get a penalty if you're never on the ball in the opponent's final third!!

Talking of penalties, there was a brave (and 100% correct) decision by the referee in the Newport v Gillingham FA Cup penalty shootout yesterday. Gills keeper encroached off his line and saved a spot-kick, referee ordered a retake and the Newport lad scored, and they won the shootout.

It would have been a braver decision if it was against the home team though.

I’d love to see a slower replay, but the handball just after halftime looked nailed on to me as well - Baker definitely moved his arm towards the ball…..only thing I couldn’t really tell is exactly where the ball hit.

All our players asked for it though…….

Although we probably deserved a penalty last night it would’ve been wasted anyway on that scoreline.
Rather we got a last minute penalty whilst in a game, during a tight draw or narrow lead to seal the win.

I think it deflected of another part of his body first (haven't seen back) and then onto arm - and the current interpretation of the rules says "A very clear deflection that results in a significant change in the trajectory of the ball should carry greater weight than arm position when considering a handball offence."

I fear that, by the time we get one, CB will have forgotten what to do. :ROFLMAO:

Wow. Gillingham away seems ages ago
I remember that afternoon so clearly, because I was cooking a lasagna while following it, and as I cheered the 4th pen, Mrs E scared the s**t out of me by saying "Again?!" right behind me - I hadn't heard her come in the room. She made me jump so hard that I knocked the sauce full of ragu sauce straight onto the kitchen floor. Lost the whole vat. A bittersweet moment if there ever was one 🥲

Love this. I remember where I was when Diana died and the twin towers were hit. You remember where you were when we played Gillingham away. True fan that!
