Ex-Staff Karl Robinson

So he took over a perennially top half, regularly play-off flirting side and kept them on a similarly trajectory but ultimately (repeatedly) failed to actually achieve a promotion because he couldn't outperform what was a very healthy budget for the level?

Sounds about right.
And blamed the players for not doing their jobs in the aftermath

Another bridesmaid act for KR. What’s that now – five playoff campaigns and he’s lost them all? One promotion is all he has and that was back in 2014-15 which resulted in relegation.

If he can’t move the dial that bit more to raise his win percentage up to actually get teams up, I sense he never will. He’s managed over 800 matches now and yet still has just the single promotion to show for it.

He’ll get another job, for sure. Whether it will be another nearly man act again remains to be seen yet the evidence suggests it will.

He is a manager who clubs use as a stepping stone to get where they want. He comes in, improves the club so much and then someone else more capable comes in and pushes the club on.

Just me who reckons that's a bit crass, then?
I sort of understand Jones' frustration but he was very evidently overweight and unfit in the times Robinson wanted to give him game time. I'm not sure either party covered themselves in glory, and it probably says a lot that since then Jones (until next season) has only played National League and League 2 football. It wasn't just KR at the club who had a problem with Jones either....

I must admit to being quite conflicted about KR.

We did play some very good football under him at times, which was very entertaining. So that is obviously a big plus.
I didn't ever warm to him as a character, and I could never listen to his post-match interviews without my toes curling and the longer he stayed the worse his drivel got. But, eventually I just didn't listen to him any more. That might all be my problem rather than his, I suppose.
His treatment of certain players was awful.
He eventually completely lost the plot and should have been sacked earlier - and he didn't really progress us much over his time with us. So that's a minus.

As a result, I am neither happy nor sad that his managerial career seems to be dwindling away - although I am sure he will keep picking up jobs, albeit at a lower level.

I suppose it is a fact that (apart from very rare occasions) a manager does not often leave on good terms with the supporters. Either they are sacked because they didn't perform well, or they leave to further their career higher up the food chain if they are a success (and thus are seen as being traitors).

I tend to not bother listening to any interviews a manager does after games, I didn't with Robinson, Manning, Des, Rowett or Bloomfield. They all have their own way they carry interviews out and have their own buzz words but generally it is just lip service and half the time isn't even their real opinion or feelings.
Robinson's football was some of the best football we have seen in years which led to seeing an awful lot of goals. He deserved to go and the club hung onto him too long but he will admit that himself (and has done).
As for treating players badly, rightly or wrongly, it isn't much different to other managers and it says a lot when a lot of the team who played under Robinson keep in touch with him still. I don't see Bloomfield getting much slack for the way he froze out Leigh and Dembele.

Salford deserve to fall out of the league. Robinson has brought them to their highest position and it all came down to one result. Hope they end up back in the National League
Absolutely no chance. They're very well backed, a decent manager will be looking at promotion next season. Where they've been under previous owners spending a fraction of what they are now is irrelevant, you're comparing apples with oranges.

For someone who's been in the game as long as he has and generally at well backed clubs just one promotion, and none in the last decade, is a honking record. If you're serious about promotion there's nothing at all that suggests he'll achieve it for you and his next job will almost certainly be a step down again.

This is, quite frankly, impossible to argue with.

Steve Gilbert will be along shortly.

A vary good manager at league 1 and 2 level, he had one bad year in his life we've all had that ,iam sure. I hope he gets another job asap 🙏 really nice guy who ever gets him will have fun and he will get them playing well has long has he doesn't end up up at Swindon i will always give him and send him my best wishes

I detest Swindon, but I wouldn’t wish Robinson on them.

For those talking about his lack of recent promotions, it was almost guaranteed we'd have gone up automatically had the covid season not been paused like it was.
Well, no, it wasn't "almost guaranteed". We weren't in the automatic places, and if it wasn't for a last minute goal against Shrewsbury just before the league was terminated we wouldn't have even been in the playoffs.

Am I thinking of the same season? I thought we were in the autos at that stage, but stand to be corrected.
Rotherham were in the second automatic spot, and were given promotion. Although they looked like they were imploding at the time. We were on a good run. I do believe if we had finished the season then we would have gone straight up, but it certainly wasn't a certainty. There were quite a few teams who were close together at the top.

Apart from the bits about him being a very good manager, a nice guy and wishing him the best I agree with every word of this.

Or you could say their best finish in the 7 seasons theyve been in league football?

f**k knows what the Salford owners think the level that club should be at but it isnt higher than league 2.

Which, coincidentally, is how a lot of supporters of Championship teams felt about us recently beimg there.

I'm fairly sure we're widely expected to disappesr without trace.

They probably said that last time, we showed them. It took 25 years admittedly but we did.
