Rehabilitation is going well for one of the Abedi brother then?

"The officers sustained life-threatening injuries on Saturday including burns, scalds and stab wounds in the attack at HMP Frankland in County Durham"

Now if this premeditated, heinous killer had been snuffed out a while ago then it wouldn`t have happened.

Now we will get another costly trial, probably an independent enquiry and more hand wringing about the "misunderstood" and as a bonus we will keep him fed and watered for even longer.

Now the other cons should hibe him a good kicking

Just because people don’t want the state to have the right to kill people doesn’t mean that we all think that they can be rehabilitated.

A guy who we all knew was capable of planning a mass murder that involved his brother as the bomb was given access to cooking oil, and the components to make homemade weapons, and rather than point out that it’s plainly stupid to do that you have to make a political point about the state killing him.

Let’s start by not giving a convicted mass murder the tools to kill and maim again shall we?

Firstly, I think it's disgusting to use the serious injury of public servants for a cheap (and misguided) political point.

Secondly, this individual was held under segregation in a unit within a unit in the High Security prison Frankland. He would likely have been under segregation from all other prisoners and would have a minimum of three staff supervising him at all times he was unlocked.

However, there are processes in place to help manage and reduce risk, and good behaviour will result in some relaxing of conditions. This could include having supervised and limited access to facilities where he could cook his own meals. I'm not talking about knives and gas ovens, but a microwave or kettle could be dangerous if misused. As for weapons, I've seen pencils used to stab people, and toothbrushes filed to a deadly point off nothing more than the rough edge of a bed frame.

Sadly, prisons are dangerous places and under paid and under valued staff put their lives on the line all the time. But these staff would be just as vulnerable, if not more vulnerable, to assaults from those waiting for the death penalty as they were to this incident. The legal system takes years and often costs more for someone to be executed than keeping them in prison for life.

Rehabilitation is always possible, but not always taken. But death isn't the answer, even for those who have seriously hurt colleagues of mine.

What a joke these jails are, high security jail & your allowed to cook your own dinner.
More privileges than a homeless person, in a shop doorway . Fffffftttt SOFT BRITAIN....
The entire Justice System has been left to rot by the Tories & now Labour - I work within the Court system and the Crown Courts in particular and they are at breaking point

Typical "Daily Mail" type response. Of course prisoners have more privileges than someone sleeping rough. Do you expect people to simply be left to rot?

And yes, high security jails have access to cook your own meals and has been the case for decades. But we're talking about a microwave, kettle etc, not Gordon Ramseys kitchen!

The worst injuries I've seen in prison have been caused by boiling water and sugar, and a plastic toilet brush that was sharpened to a point. You can't completely eliminate risk from those who have all the time in the world to plan and carry out an attack. And any access to even basic cooking facilities would have only come after a prolonged period of good behaviour and compliance.

My thoughts are with those who were injured whilst doing their jobs rather than some knee jerk bullshit response like your own.

Absolutely clueless, oh the old kettle & boiling water& sugar trick. Why on earth have they got a kettle in their cell for?? . Along with all the other luxuries.
Years ago they had to fill up with hot water at a urn at the end of the landing in their cup.
Plus a jug of water. Too soft
Your reply was so The Guardian

My reply was to you.

And yes, I know about the water urns, and guess what? The same attacks still happened. I've witnessed them and more.

Luxuries? I'm guessing that you mean an 18" tv with no more than 8 preset channels or a PlayStation 1? Or maybe the 500ml capacity kettle?

Yeah, we're going really soft!

Clueless is all I say, if you work for the prison service,I guess they've employed the right sort of person for their soft regime.. You know dam well they have more rights & privileges & luxuries than your letting on.
As for earning them, well that's not exactly hard is it..

Maybe you can list the luxuries that are available so I can have a good look for them when I'm back in on Monday!

You obviously didn't know the old regime then.. Maybe just a bit before your time.Prison has changed dramatically since the mid 80s.
Unbelievably so much more cushy.... On every aspect,I don't need to prove nothing, I know...

You really think so ,trust me I do.. End of pointless chat 🥱

You`ll find that he will always play the man and nobody knows anything better than him. Perfect fit for the minority group.

Aside from that............ why are we giving extremely dangerous people access to ANYTHING that can cause harm to others?

Someone certainly fecked up the risk assessment - "lets give this mass murdering, prison officer harming terrorist access to cooking oil, a method to heat it and for good measure we will give him things he can easily make into weapons."

He wants hot water - give him a mug full through the door hatch.

He wants a toothbrush or bog brush - give him a single use one made of compressed cardboard.

He wants to cook his own dinner - sorry you`ll eat what you are given.

He wants to "earn privileges"............ he`s never getting out so why bother playing the charade?

Better still............. if he was dead it would never have happened.
