Ex-Player Josh Murphy

Ok so let’s say 8 in the league including the extra playoff games then, still hardly a stretch for someone who people much cleverer than me rated him at nearly £1m.
It’s not really about goals, he’s not a striker. He was integral to the way we played and would offer a more effective outlet now than the wingers we have, even if they were fit. But we move on and hope we can get some good performances from our wide men after the break.

We should probably give the new signings a bit longer before forming a judgement though? Murphy had made no impact at this stage of his career here?

Josh Murphy is this decades Jack Midson. Whether we follow Murphy’s career into tennis coaching whilst rueing the day he left us remains to be seen.

I’ve watched quite a lot of Pompey games this season as they’ve often played at times that we don’t and I enjoy seeing them lose. On the whole Murphy has been OK, but not tearing things up. The player we saw skinning fullbacks for fun with raw pace in league 1, hasn’t really been able to do that as easily in the Championship against better fullbacks.

I think when making comparisons between Murphy & our new wingers you have to remember we watched Murphy play against far lower quality opposition.

He's no longer our player. Remember he choose not to resign despite all we did for him so move on. I think a 3 yr contract for someone injury prone is nuts, the club did well

We also only saw Murphy play his best for the whole of 6 months in a 2 and a half year spell.

We do with Dane Scarlett.
I really hope he doesn’t pass us by without giving him proper service. He’s potentially lethal but it’s no good him running his race before we start getting the ball forward with any quality. It was a really poor team effort to leave him so isolated and he be the casualty after an hour.

Had he been on the field in the last 10 minutes as we started getting bodies around the box, who’d bet against him finding something from nothing?

That is why once in a while we should try 2 up top. Scarlett alongside the physicality of Goodwin could be interesting.

I am starting to think, that with the players we have currently available, that two up top might be a better option. We carry very little threat and whoever plays as the one up just gets isolated, having two up there seemed to get us further up the pitch.

I think we have to be honest and accept we have one of the weakest teams and squads in the division, we are not going to football our way to a lot of results so might have to go back to basics for this season and build from there.

Problem is.....have you seen some of these Championship Centre Backs? Lumping it forward to any two of Harris, Scarlett & Goodwin against some of these ogres (e.g. that Souttar fella on Tuesday) is unlikely to be any more successful than trying and failing to pass it around them was!

[and the annoying thing is that they're not like those League Two ogres who would be good in the air, but trip over the ball as soon as kick it when it's on the turf.....they can play as well.....]
