Ex-Player Josh Murphy

No one has suggested that Murphy should be seen as a club legend. But my understanding of the original post was that football relationships are often very brief and we should remember their time with us rather than the fact that they leave (as long as they don't absolutely take the P**s when leaving or after the event!)
To place Jim Smith in the same context as Murphy (regardless) is at best misplaced, at worst insensitive to our history. Not something anyone should defend.

Jim Smith also walked out on us for money but both of them gave us more than enough back. Murphy didn’t take the P**s, his contract was up, but I feel he led us on a bit with all the smiley selfies and social media stuff after Wembley. Anyway let’s hope one of our new signings can match up to him or even better him.

I don’t remember that chant at all. In fact, we sang QPR as they left the pitch. Thought our support was class, although winning 3 nil probably helped!
Yes we did and when Jim Smith was walking towards the tunnel which was our end we did sing 🎶 you should have the Manor 🎶

I thought Jim Smith left because he asked Maxwell for more money now we were in division 1and Maxwell apparently said no.

I look at things like this. Murphy was a hero, at Wembley and in various other games during a 4-5 month incredible run of form.

Jim Smith and a number of ex players were legends over a number of years and took us on an unbelieveable journey.

Players like CB, EM, SL and CB and gradually a few others are potentially earning that legendary status too.

There were also of course many players before my time who the same accolades could be afforded to.

JM was a hero but not a legend, that takes years, not months.

Jim wanted to stay and would have for £5k less than he got at QPR but Mr Maxwell was a little put out as Jim was , rightly so , getting an awful amount of credit for what he had done...Two Champions seasons in a row , cup runs ...absolutely amazing and just a fair reflection of that would have kept Jim here.
Murphy no comparison at all and it is disgusting that he is even mentioned in the same breath tbh.
Other players perhaps but not Jim.

He wanted £40000pa but Maxwell wouldn’t budge above £25000pa
Maurice Evans did well but we can only dream of what Jim might have done

This is going to be one of those threads where people are going to get angry about something that wasn't said, keep referencing what wasn't said, and then what wasn't said will become the truth.

This all started with a discussion about showing Murphy (not a legend) our appreciation if/when he returns. After all, he did play a pretty big reason part in our promotion. Fairly reasonable so far.

Someone posted to say that Murphy left because of money, and was therefore little more than a mercenary and shouldn't be clapped.

A poster then said that Jim Smith (almost the definition of legend) also left because of money (Maxwell entirely to blame), but that is part of football and shouldn't be the be all and end all when he comes to judging someone.

No one has said that Murphy is a legend.

No one has said that Jim Smith isn't a legend.

Just that players and managers come and go, and in time, you remember them more for what they did whilst they was here rather than their leaving.

To get back on subject, I hope that Josh Murphy is appreciated if he plays against us, think he deserves that. But if he did a Sam Smith after scoring then I'd give him s**t in return.

Yeah but what about LP, MM, DR, GS, PW, and obviously KB?

Context Scotchers - it was completely misplaced to use the two as a relative comparison. You, not others, are getting hung up on the ´legend’ status. If you know your history, to compare the two was totally misplaced and ill thought through as they are not just nuanced in there different circumstances, they are completely different contextually!

One last chance. NO ONE was comparing them as individuals.

Maybe not but to bring Jim Smith into a conversation about Murphy leaving for a better contract was disrespectful to a true legend for our club IMO.

I don’t blame Murphy for doing what’s best for him as it will be his final big contact but there was no need to bring Jim Smith into it.

One last time, and unlike you I’ll spare the petty ignorance of putting it in capitals - it is context! As for the capitals, when I am over next we can happily discuss such rudeness in person if you so wish - i have always shown you respect - but such petulance I won’t forget. DM me if you want to discuss further.

I think JS is the wrong comparison, someone like Callum O'Dowda is a similar story in that he helped us out of L2 then jumped ship to Bristol City. Are we booing or clapping him when Cardiff visit?
LOL - comparing Josh Murphy with Jim Smith is disrespectful to Jim Smith, but comparing Josh Murphy with Callum O'Dowda is probably disrespectful to Josh Murphy!

If you don't want an open discussion then that's your issue. You talk about context but have entirely made up this disrespect for Jim Smith that was completely out of context with the post you're referencing!

I think petulance is closer to your home than mine.
